Scotties Make Wolves Howl in 46-0 Win

The Wolf Point Wolves hosted the Glasgow Scotties on the gridiron Sept. 30, and they were determined to prevail over the Scotties. Unfortunately, the most newsworthy notes of the evening for the home team were their senior recognition and homecoming festivities.

It took a while for the Scotties to warm up their offense, but defensively they denied the Wolves right from the beginning. Despite a 34-yard pass reception by Trent Herbert, when the first quarter came to an end, the scoreboard was blank.

In the second quarter, the Wolves doggedly made their way to within 25 yards of scoring play when Luke Breigenzer stirred things up with his first interception of the game, making it to just about mid-field before being stopped by the Wolves. Later, starting quarterback Darrin Wersal got the ball to Cade Myrick, who scored the first touchdown of the game for six points. Cache Younkin's attempt for the extra point was successful and moved the Scotties to 7-0.

Before the half came to an end, Nolan Viste successfully crossed the goal line off a pitch from Wersal to increase the Scotties' lead. The Wolves were able to block the kick attempt, and the half ended with Glasgow on top 13-0. Breigenzer had another outstanding interception and ran the length of the field to reach the end zone. The touchdown was denied, however, due to a Glasgow penalty in the backfield.

When the boys returned to the field after the halftime break, it was more of the same. The remainder of the contest was a flurry of activity as Glasgow continued to dominate offensively and defensively. Junior Alex Fransen showed his versatility by intercepting the ball and running 78 yards for the third Scottie touchdown of the game, and Younkin capped it off with a successful PAT.

Senior Benji Phillips increased the Scotties' lead even more with a 24-yard touchdown run, followed by another extra point by Younkin.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Scotties were ahead 27-0, and that lead would grow and grow. Breigenzer snatched a 36-yard pass off Wersal and hit the end zone for six more points. An unsuccessful attempt by the Scotties at a two-point conversion left the score at 33-0.

With an eight-yard rush into the end-zone, Wersal added another six points to the Scotties' score, followed by another kick between the uprights for Younkin.

With a hand-off from Wersal, John McColly turned on his wheels for a 23-yard run, but was stopped just short of scoring the TD.

The final score of the game for the Scotties was courtesy of Viste, who completed a short touchdown off Wersal to bring the score to 46-0. A botched snap for the PAT would finalize that score for the evening.

The Scotties will host Harlem this Friday, Oct. 7 at Scottie Field.
