Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Ann Luella Carman

Ann Luella (Hastings) Carman, 92, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, of natural causes.

The memorial service will be held at St. Peters Episcopal Cathedral in Helena on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 1:30 p.m., followed by a reception for her family and friends. Internment will be at Highland Cemetery in Glasgow.

Family members and friends visited and comforted her at the Renaissance Senior Care Center in Helena, Mont.

She was born on April 18, 1924, in Red Wing, Minn., to Luella and John Hastings. She married Edward Carman on Sept. 30, 1942 in Mountain Iron, Minn.

She attended school in Mountain Iron, Minn. She was an accomplished solo pianist who performed recitals, accompanied school choirs and played for social club events. She maintained her love of music and the arts and was proud of her service on the Community Concert Board in Glasgow. She was also honored to be a dedicated member of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization).

She worked at The First National Bank in Glasgow for 23 years until her retirement in 1986. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling to Russia with her friends through the Men for Missions International organization and to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Prayer Breakfast. She drove to Gull Lake, Sandy Beach, Minn., every year to spend a week with Evie and Ed Crum, where they met Dennis and Christine Huberty and their three sons. The Hubertys became a second family for her, and they maintained close contact until her passing.

She moved to Helena in 2005 to be closer to family, and she soon became actively involved in church and social groups. The fellowship in Bible study was always an important part of her life.

Knitting, needlepoint and reading gave her great joy and she enjoyed playing bridge and working jigsaw and crossword puzzles with her friends. She treasured her many friends in the Knitters for Peace group in Helena, and actively participated in their philanthropic knitting projects. After she moved to Helena, she looked forward to annual vacations at Canon Beach, Ore., with her daughter, Jean, with a few days in the Vancouver, Wash. area. Family members in the area enjoyed time together each year with Ann and Jean.

She was delighted when her daughters and son and their families and her brother, Neil Hastings, with his wife, Liz, surprised her with a celebration on her 80th birthday while she was vacationing in Canon Beach, Ore. She enjoyed seeing pictures and keeping in touch with all of the extended family on Facebook.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986 after 43 years of marriage; and their son, Edward Carman, Jr., who died in 1951 shortly after birth; and her only brother, Neil Hastings, who died in 2015 in Vancouver, Wash.

Survivors include four children, Patt White and his wife, Marlyn, of Battle Ground, Wash., Dr. Tim Carman of Kalispell, Joan Meyer and her husband, Bruce, of Helena, and Jean Carman in Spokane, Wash.; six granddaughters, Dawn (White) Coyer, Michele White, Shannon White, Jami (Carman) Hanson, Jessica Meyer (Ben Swanson) and Nicole Meyer; two great-granddaughters, Chelsea (Coyer) Gress and Courtney Coyer; one great-grandson, Everett Swanson; and four great-great-grandsons, Ryder Gress, Carson Gress, Coletrane Gress and Levi Vivian.
