Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Gianforte's 'Roundup' Comes to Town

Gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte visited Glasgow and Malta on Feb. 10 to speak to supporters and members of the public. The stops were part of the candidate's Regulation Roundup tour, which will include 41 cities throughout the state. He pointed out that he has visited Glasgow eight times in the past six months.

At Farm Equipment Sales in Glasgow, Gianforte addressed a small crowd and discussed the necessity of bringing good jobs to both the state and the region.

The candidate also took questions about bison release efforts in the region and the difficulties of combating illegal drug use. The latter question, posed by Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier, was answered during a follow-up conversation with the candidate on Feb. 15: "I agree-and I mentioned this to Sherif Meier-it's less expensive to implement treatment than it is to incarcerate. Plus we have a much better chance to rehabilitate them as members of the society."

Via telephone, he went on to elaborate on remarks made at the Glasgow meeting regarding the American Prairie Reserve and other organizations seeking to release "free-roaming" bison.

"I'm concerned that we have different rules depending on whether you're grazing bison or cattle," Gianforte said. "The first step for state administration-and what you have to understand is that many of these agencies are engaged in an effort to elevate wildlife above montana livelihoods-is that we need representation that will defend those livelihoods."

The campaign's Director of Communication Aaron Flint described stops along the tour thus far as, "incredibly successful" at providing Gianforte with feedback about challenges faced from a wide array on Montanans.
