School Board Votes on New Curriculum

Trustees Review Evaluation Tools

The Glasgow School Board held a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 3 for a board work session, and to address an agenda item from a previous meeting held Jan. 20.

The meeting began with discussion of language arts curriculums presented to Superintendent Bob Connors and the Trustees.

Three different programs had been presented for consideration: ReadyGen, Journeys and Wonders. At the Jan. 20 meeting, support was overwhelmingly for the Journeys curriculum. A recommendation was not made at that time by Supt. Connors because the trustees and himself had not had ample opportunity to review the programs and weigh the pros and cons – including cost.

At the Wednesday meeting, Supt. Connors made a recommendation to the school board that the preferred Journeys curriculum be purchased and the recommendation passed unanimously.

A discussion was also held re: a request for transportation of a student who lives outside of the parameters the school district is required to provide transportation for. Supt. Connors stressed that to accommodate this specific request, there would be no bus stops added to the route, and there would be no extra cost to the school district.

Connors also stressed that if the trustees approved the request, it would not be setting a precedent, as each request of this nature would be considered on a case-by-case basis. After a brief discussion, the request was approved.

Moving into the work session, the trustees and Connors reviewed superintendent evaluation tools. Tools currently used by the schools in Anaconda and Sidney were presented, as well as a tool used by Jefferson High School. After lengthy discussion, it was decided that Supt. Connors would work on making some revisions to the tool currently used by the Glasgow School System and bring it back to the board for further review.

Prior to adjournment of the meeting, a brief discussion was held re: restructuring the meeting agendas, and the use of the MyVoice surveys.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the district board room.
