Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Be Proud, Glasgow

LTE: My Saturday started as any other, besides the fact my daughter and I had our first practice for a 5th grade girls basketball team. While going through drills, Jon Kolstad stuck his head in the church gym door. I shouted at him to come in and he asked if some high school girls could use the other half of the court to shoot around. I told him that was ok and continued with the practice. We finished conditioning and were having a final team meeting on the base line when Jon and the girls came over. With those 5th grade girls eyes as big as the moon, you could see the admiration and a gleam on the girls faces. As these unselfish older girls talked with them answering questions and giving advice. We as a team decided our first team activity would be to go to the girls game that night. So we met early. got their faces painted and Scottie gear on. We did it right! We arrived at the game and sat behind the team. The girls were warming up, and we were picking out our favorite players. When one of the girls walked over, took her warmup off and handed it to one of my players. She continued by asking her to wear it during the game. Then, one by one, each girl handed their warmup to one of my players. It looked like a concert when the crowd tries to reach up to touch the rock star. These little girls hands were raised out with fingers wiggling back and forth trying to be the next one to catch a jersey. That is about the time Jon asked if the team would like to come down to the court when the starters were introduced. So each starter would get their name called out and run down the line giving each girl a high five. WOW, how a normal Saturday turned out to be extraordinary because a coach and a group of very special girls took some time out of a day. A day that was suppose to be focused all about them and the game they were about to play. Instead they unselfishly took a little time to make a group of upcoming girls feel vastly special. Be proud Glasgow that you have some great girls and a fine coaches representing you. Thank you!
