The North Country Mavericks traveled to Nashua Thursday night for two games against the Porcupines. The varsity girls started off the evening just a little after 6 p.m.
The Lady Mavs undoubtedly dominated the entire contest, but the scrappy Lady Porcupines didn't go down without a fight. The game was definitely physical, and both teams consistently had girls picking themselves up of the floor.
With their overall scoring fluctuating quite a bit in each quarter, Nashua struggled to maintain any consistency. Although the second and fourth quarters were productive for them, they were only able to score two points in the first quarter and one point in the entire third quarter.
With their intimidating presence, Maverick sophomores Jada Sudbrack and Mickayla Johnson proved to be effective factors in denying Nashua's offense under the basket. Tatum Moore, Bailey Funk and Kayleigh Cummings were relentless out on the floor, forcing a number of turnovers that Nashua was just unable to recover from. The Mavericks claimed the win with a score of 49-28.
Moore was the top scorer for the Lady Mavericks with 16 points. Other scorers: Jada Sudbrack, 11; Mickayla Johnson, 10; Bailey Funk, 2; Kayleigh Cummings, 3; Casity Boucher, 6; Payton Chopper, 1
The leading scorer for Nashua was eighth grader Anika Peters with 8. Also contributing were: Taylor Laumeyer, 2; Ziggy Chamberlain, 4; Sophie Koessl, 2; Cordelia Nickels, 2; Ali Cunningham, 2; Brennan Peters, 4; Tasha Chamberlain, 4.
Immediately following the girls game, the boys stepped on the court to warm up for their game.
It was another physical contest with a lot of bodies hitting the floor throughout. The Porcupines gained the lead in the game more than once, but were unable to stay on top and ultimately fell to the Mavericks 43-47.
Leading the Mavericks in scoring was Trace Simonson with 18 points. Also scoring were: Cache Younkin, 11; Wrangler Jones, 8; Logan McColly, 3; Channing Mavencamp, 3; John McColly, 4.
Lane Nickels dropped the most baskets for the Porcupines with 17 points in the game. Also contributing were: Gunner Greene, 2; Nolan Viste, 2; Dalton Kautz, 6; Gavin Adkins, 8; Chase Williams, 6; Dylan Sanner, 2.
The North Country boys and girls were on the road again to Scobey for games Friday, Jan. 8. The Lady Mavs came away with a win, but the boys were unable to defeat the Spartans in their contest.
In the first game of the evening, the Lady Mavs easily beat the Lady Spartans 60-33. Scobey was plagued with poor results at the free throw line (4 for 14) and turnovers throughout the game. The Spartans were never able to stifle the Maverick’s offense and their comparatively more effective free throw ratio (10 for 19).
Once again, leading the Lady Mavs in scoring was senior Tatum Moore with 24 points – 9 of which were recorded as three-pointers. Also in the double digits were Mickayla Johnson, 13, and Kayleigh Cummings, 10. Cummings dropped two three-points shots in the contest. Jada Sudbrack contributed 8 points in the game and sunk a three-pointer of her own. Casity Boucher recorded 4 points and Bailey Funk scored a bucket at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to add a point to the final score.
For the Lady Spartans, top scorer was junior Alexa Welchlin with 10 points. Also scoring for Scobey: Tia Hallock, 4; Mayson Hudyma, 9; Brooklyn Ferestad, 1; Shaylynn Fjeld, 3; Kaitlin Farver, 2, and Marissa Thompson, 2.
In the boys game, the Mavericks were unable to ever gain ground on the Spartans, falling short in scoring each quarter. Losing two of their top scorers to the five foul limit, the Mavericks also collectively earned a total of 22 fouls. The Spartans were able to capitalize on that throughout the game with 60 percent success at the charity stripe. Despite eventually fouling out of the game, Younkin was the top scorer for the evening with 16 points. The typical dominant Simonson only came away with 9 points against the Spartans. Also scoring for the Mavericks: Layne Engel, Logan McColly, Wrangler Jones, and Chris Depuydt all with 3 points; Channing Mavencamp, 4, and John McColly with 2.
