Dawgs Unable to Douse Flames

Team Looks Forward to Miles City

The high school Ice Dawgs hosted the Flathead Flames Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19. From the looks of the official scoresheets, a hockey game broke out during the fight.

By the end of two games, Glasgow left the ice with 19 total penalties, 63 penalty minutes served, and two skaters ejected from the game.

It would seem that the time spent in the penalty box was a factor in the outcome of the games. However, only three of Flathead's goals for the weekend were scored on power plays. It is more likely that Flathead scored more goals because they took aim more often.

Ice Dawg goalie Casey Mattfeldt defended the net more than 100 times in the two games. In comparison, the opponent's goalie only had to face 22 shots on goal.

Flathead scored twice more before Taylor Padden was able to answer with a goal in the third period. The Flames finished the game with a goal late in the third and a score of 7-2.

In the second game held Saturday morning, Padden scored the lone goal of the game for the Dawgs. Following three goals by the Flames, Padden got one past their goalie late in the first period. The Flames would go on to score five more times to claim the win with a final score of 8-1.

"We really just got overworked," said assistant coach Mike Eliason. "We started out better in the second game and gave a much better effort, but ultimately, it just wasn't enough."

Eliason expressed disappointment with the losses stating, "It's always frustrating to lose to a team you know you can compete with, but we should see them again at the state tournament."

The team is looking forward to this weekend when they travel to Miles City to take on the Generals.

There are still opportunities to watch the Ice Dawgs play at home, with games scheduled in January at the Valley Event Center. for the Dawgs' first goal in the second period of game one.
