Rubber Soul

That last little rain we had made me think about digging out my overshoes, and then I remembered, my overshoes are pretty much like everyone else’s today, either irrigation boots or Muck boots. Do you remember when we all wore rubber overshoes? As I remember, the most popular women’s overshoes were those lovely, zip up the front, fur topped ones. They could be found in a variety of colors also. The young kids pretty much wore pull-on overshoes. Some of the little boys and, of course, teenage boys and men may have had buckle overshoes. This apparel was aptly named as they were worn over your shoes. There was also a dress version, which most people called “rubbers.” These were a lot less bulky, only covering the bottom part of your shoe or boot about up to your ankle bone. The nice thing about using “rubbers” for the “go to town” trips was the fact that they were unlikely covered with that stuff you pick up when in the barnyard. I am sure the only reason they did stay fairly clean was the fact that they were so short and their purpose was limited. Being a parent also made me discover how easy it was to stuff overshoes into the mail box while you waited for the school bus. That must have been about the time snow boots made their appearance and it was no longer cool to wear overshoes. The great part about overshoes was that you always had your shoes with you when you got to school or work. They didn’t get forgotten at home.
