MDT Seeks Comments on HWY 24 Bridge Replacement

Opheim - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to replace the bridge over the Middle Fork of Porcupine Creek on Montana Highway 24 about 11 miles south of Opheim at reference post 39.3. The project is expected to extend approximately a quarter mile from each end of the bridge replacement.

Proposed work includes replacing the existing structure with a two-lane bridge on the existing alignment and upgrading signage and guardrail. Work will also be necessary in order to connect three road approaches to the roadway. During construction traffic will be maintained using a temporary, two-lane detour adjacent to the existing structure. The purpose of the project is to increase the effectiveness and enhance the safety of the route.

Construction of the proposed bridge replacement will be determined based on completion of all project development activities and availability of funds. New right-of-way acquisition is not expected; however, relocation of utilities and temporary construction permits appear likely. MDT staff will contact all potentially affected landowners prior to performing survey work on their land. If necessary, staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
