Nashua Jr. High Girls Bring Home the Hardware

Friday night saw the clash of two evenly matched opponents as the Nashua Porcupines and the Dodson Coyotes took to the gym floor at Saco High School to determine the Junior High Girls' Championship. Both teams advanced earlier in the day with the Coyotes outlasting the Frazer Bearcubs, and the Porcupines dispatching the Lustre Lions.

The game started out as both teams appeared jittery and nervous about playing in the big game. The Coyotes jumped out to an early 6 – 4 first quarter lead. In the second quarter the Porcupine offense came to life as the Porcupines tallied 12 points in the quarter. The Coyotes put up seven points of their own, with the Porcupines up 16 – 13 at the half.

A luxury the Porcupines have had all year is their strong defense with Anika Peters, Brennan Peters, Mattea Piersak, Ali Cunningham and Devin Fromdahl providing the perimeter defensive pressure and Lauren Padden, Kaydin Sibley and Hadynn Adkins defending the post.

The Porcupines and Coyotes continued to bang away at each other in the third quarter as the Coyotes made a strong run at Nashua outscoring the purple and gold to close within two at the end of the third quarter 22-20. Nashua's strong defense clamped down on Dodson in the third quarter, only allowing the Coyotes six points while scoring 11 of their own to take their second straight championship with a score of 33-26.

Leading the scoring for Nashua was Anika Peters with 15, Kaydin Sibley 7, Ali Cunningham 6, Brennan Peters 3 and Mattea Piersak with 2. Scoring for Dodson was Christina Jaynes with 11, Kailee Henry 9, Izzabella Messerly 4 and Melony Fetter 2.
