Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Main Street Memories with Scott Kirby

The Northeastern Arts Network's November performer was Scott Kirby, who brought to the stage more than just music. His Main Street Memories multi-media project combined history, oratory, photos, Kirby's original paintings, and music from several genres.

He began the show with an original piece, Main Street Farewell, which set the mood for his theme: Main Street is more than just a place, but a passage or a journey. His unique take on a piece of Americana highlighted iconic music figures such as John Philip Sousa and Scott Joplin.

The visual art, music, and Kirby's musings on baseball, the prairie, and small towns, melded into a performance that evoked strong nostalgia, but also a surprising liveliness. His performance of Boogie in C was vibrant. It was easy to imagine an entire band on stage, rather than a lone pianist.

The second half of the show featured more of Kirby's original compositions as well as artwork. Evoking the loneliness of the plains, the sounds of the music reflected the isolation and the vast space of our countryside. His music captured the sounds of thunderstorms rolling in, light rains and the blossoming of spring. With songs such as Reverie for the High Plains and Garden of Lost Dreams, his love for the Great Plains was evident throughout the evening and a reminder of why we love this place.

Coming up, the Valinor Quartet will bring a unique performance which will blend the culturally diverse backgrounds of the members. With members from England, Russia and the U.S., the acoustic group promises a blend of jazz and classical, and music from the Beatles, to Gypsy Jazz, to Tango and more. Slava Tolstoy (guitar), Ben Powell (violin), Greg Feingold (bass), and Sergei Teleshev (accordion) will be performing Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 at 7 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, or by contacting Allison Nichols, 228-8255 or [email protected]. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $13 for Seniors, and $5 for students. Glasgow Activity Pass holders and preschoolers are admitted for free.
