Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

John Victor Knight

John Victor Knight, 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, in Perham, Minn.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 6, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 4020 Honor Guard.

He was born June 23, 1925, in Wolf Point, Mont., to Leonard and Lucia Knight. He graduated from Glasgow High School in 1946 after returning from the U. S. Army, serving during World War II in the European Theater with the 612th Graves Registration Company. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1951. He married Marjorie Jacobson on May 31, 1952. He continued his education at Moorhead State College in 1954 and again in 1967. He taught industrial arts at Perham High School for 25 years.

He was very active in the Perham community and had many significant achievements throughout his life. He served as scoutmaster in Perham for 23 years and received the Silver Beaver Award. He received the Outstanding Leadership and Service in the Community Award from the Perham Jaycees. He was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church, serving in the choir and acting as lay preacher. He was a charter member of the Perham Lions Club and served as district governor. For many years, he traveled to seven area nursing homes as RSVP volunteer with his trusted golden retriever, Blondie. He was a member of American Legion Post 61, and chaplain and life member of VFW Post 4020 of Perham.

He loved the outdoors - hunting in eastern Montana, fishing, camping and boating on Little Pine Lake where he lived. He was a valuable resource for family history and storytelling. Singing "How Great Thou Art" acappella on a Sunday morning in his mother's home church in Bodo, Norway, was a highlight in his life - a great desire that was fulfilled in the 90s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge Knight; one son, Terry Knight; and five brothers, including the late Ivy Knight of Glasgow.

Survivors include one brother, Richard Knight and his wife, Norma, of Bremerton, Wash .; one son, Dan Knight and his wife, Laurie, of St. Peter, Minn .; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Sharleen Clark and Doris Leader of Glasgow and Laura Haefer of Billings.
