Chinook Winds Breeze Through the Hi-Line

NAN Kicks off Winter Concert Series

The Northeastern Arts Network kicked off this year's series with a bonus concert. The Chinook Winds Quintet of the Great Falls Symphony graciously agreed to a community concert after conducting musical workshops at local schools.

The Quintet, composed off Norman Gonzales, (flute), Melanie Pozdol (oboe), Chris Mothersole, (clarinet), Elizabeth Crawford, (bassoon), and Mike Nelon (horn), performed sets drawn primarily from the recent Vive La France Chamber Music Series in Great Falls.

They opened with a score The Barber of Seville, familiar to many music lovers and Looney Tunes fans. They interspersed their performance with snippets of background info on their musical selections and some personal anecdotes about being back on the Hi-Line. Crawford made note of how much they enjoyed playing with the kids in our area and asked family and community members to encourage kids to pursue and support the arts.

The group was enthusiastic in their performance, from a piece by Maurice Ravel to Jean Francaix's first Quintet. Classical music isn't really my thing, so I was most taken with their renditions of Bohemian Rhapsody and Sweet Child of Mine, arranged by Nelson. Classical nut or no, I did enjoy the show. The group's passion shone throughout, as did their personalities.

The small auditorium at Glasgow High School lends itself to an intimate setting, and intermissions in the cafeteria allow concertgoers to approach the artists with questions and/or compliments.

Up next from Northeastern Arts Network will be Wylie & the Wild West Band on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
