Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Scottie Volleyball Rips Through Conference Foes

Team Defeats Harlem, Wolf Point After Falling to Glendive

Winning comes more easily some days than others, as the Scottie volleyball team found out last weekend.

In game one against Glendive on Sept. 10, the team came out on fire and, with the backing of a raucous student section led by the GHS cheerleaders, cruised to a 25-13 win. Serving was tough, offense was varied, and good defense created even more momentum.

In games two through four the Scotties flattened out and passing became an issue, which spiraled into a lack of offense which Glendive capitalized on. They finished out the match, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18.

Glendive is a well-coached team that had a little more offense than the Scotties could take. The girls will get a second chance at the Red Devils later in the season.

The night of Sept. 11, the team faced conference foe Harlem for the first time this season. Even though the Lady Wildcats are much improved from past years, Glasgow was able to focus and get the job done very efficiently, 25-8, 25-10, 25-13. Camaraderie between the two schools was high and the crowd was treated to fine displays of sportsmanship and team support.

Serving was strong and strategic and the GHS girls were relentless. They set the ball up, and finished the volleys with decisiveness. All players saw a great deal of court time, adding depth to an already-solid Scottie bench.

The third match of the weekend saw GHS travel to Wolf Point for a Saturday afternoon match. An ever-scrappy and very determined Wolf Point team proved themselves tireless as they continually kept the ball alive despite the varied offense the Scotties delivered. It was, again, strength of serve and solid basic skills that ultimately tipped the scales in the Scotties' favor and they won the match, 27-25, 25-17, 25-17.

The conference race is shaping up to be an exciting one, even though long-time rival Plentywood has switched to Class C. Their competitiveness was welcome, and pushed GHS to its limits. To fill in the dates the Scotties have picked up two new matches, home and away, with Class A Sidney. This Thursday, Sept. 17, you can catch the Scotties in action at GHS gymnasium versus the Poplar Indians (C Squad starts at 4 p.m.) and on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Malta (1 p.m.).
