Glasgow Educator Offers Online Arts Course

Glasgow resident Cathryn Sugg will be teaching an online studio art course through Fort Peck Community College beginning this Fall Semester. The course, ARTZ 211, is designed to teach fundamental drawing techniques, including shading, gesture drawing, and the elements of art and principles of design. Additionally, it will connect learners with contemporary non-traditional art content and teach them processes for accessing this content digitally.

Students will develop habits of art engagement and analysis. If they choose, students will have the option of creating documents necessary to promoting their own artworks online and having their art exhibited.

Sugg, who operated the Goodkind Gallery in Glasgow from 2010-2013, was born and raised in Saskatchewan. She received her early schooling there before relocating to Las Vegas in 2001, where she completed high school and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking and painting from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

After completing her undergraduate studies, Sugg attended University of Montana from 2007-2010, where she received a Master of Fine Arts with emphasis in painting and drawing, as well Secondary Arts Education Certification.

Sugg's efforts reflect research she conducted beginning in 2009, at the suggestion of former GHS Principle Marj Markle. Her initial research was into non-traditional arts produced by ethnic minorities (American Indians in particular).

During her ownership of the Goodkind Gallery, Sugg continued with her research and when the business closed in 2013, she began work for the The Office of Public Instruction, which connected her with the Montana Digital Professional Learning Network, based out of UM and affiliated with OPI. The course now being offered through FPCC is intended to put the most recently developed systems Sugg has been creating to the test. Her latest research, reflected in this course, include teaching studio techniques by recorded content on YouTube, critiquing art via webinar, and using social media (Facebook & Instagram) to share and discuss artwork.

The registration deadline for the course is Sept. 16. For information, contact Sugg at (406) 671-0659 or [email protected], or call Fort Peck Community College at (406) 768-6300.
