Astronomy or Astrology? You Decide

Astrology columns drive me crazy. People love them, I know, but it's not science. And these things are often in a newspaper, so even though every reader knows full well that the stars are about as reliable as a fortune cookie when it comes to the subject of, say, one's personal destiny, it still looks official somehow. Sanctioned even. That seems ridiculous to me and makes me worry about the state of things generally.

One alternative is an astronomy column. I've been hunting around for a few stargazers with a background in actual science to chime in regularly about all things cosmic. Think Big Sky Astronomy, penned by someone you know right here in Valley County.

I for one would rather read (let alone edit) something like that. It's tricky because people tend to like reading about their respective futures—from a serious source of information or otherwise. "It's fun," is what I keep hearing. Real astronomy isn't as popular, if the media today is any indication of public opinion. What to do?

Solution: Let the good people of Glasgow pick a winner.

Understand, I'm not seeking anonymous tips here. I want actual readers to make themselves known on the subject publicly in the way of letters.

If enough readers write in to support the idea of Big Sky Astronomy, it'll be a new feature in the paper. If I get smacked for my impudence and told to run what people really want, so be it.

Please send your letters to [email protected], or send them into the office the old fashioned way. Results TBA.
