Turning Heads, Reds Start Swinging

Baseball diamonds come alive in the spring time in Glasgow. The Cal Ripken League opened their season in late April; the softball girls traded winter caps for helmets as soon as the ground thawed. A rare warm and dry spring has primed the area youth for another promising summer sports season in Northeast Montana.

The Glasgow Reds baseball players started their practice on April 1. Spring training comes with a large amount of soil, grass, water and facility works-by volunteers-to get the field in shape for four months of practice and games. The boys are itching to put their skills to test as they begin the regular season and travel to Havre for a non-conference game with the Havre Northstars on Sunday, May 10.

The Glasgow Reds will again field an A team and a B team this season. The A team will mostly include the veteran players and the B team the younger, with several players floating in between as necessary. Fourth-year Head Coach Jack Sprague expects to have the team makeup and player positions shaken out around June 1 when the roster is due. In the mean time, the early games of the season will help him determine how the lineup goes.

Here is coach Sprague's game plan for the opening Sunday in Havre. The B team plays first at 2 pm. Kasey Seyfert will get the ball first, with Bryce Legare, Brayden Jackson, Hunter Losleben, and Parker Kulzcyk in the relief rotation. Tyler Hersom will be their main catcher.

The A team follows with a 4 pm game. Sam Schultz will start on the mound with Gage Legare anchoring behind the plate. Ryan Padden, Jake "Cutter" Kolstad, Jason Thibault, and Keil Krumwiede together complete the rotation.

Seniors Jason Thibault (P, 2B) and Keil Krumwiede (P, SS) both have signed a letter of intent with MSU-Billings Yellowjackets for the fall.

Other Reds players include Alex Fransen, Blake Mattfeldt, Blayne Diesen, Chase Guttenberg, Darrin Wersal, Dylan Guttenberg, Ethan Stone, Gabe LaGree, Jace Schumacher, Kadin Chatten, Kevin McDonald, Kevin Schindler, and Lane Provencher.

Coach Sprague will have Adam "Bags" Denny, Jon Kolstad, Zach Rogers and Grant Legare in his coaching staff. Denny, of Wolf Point who played center field for Dakota College at Bottineau and Dawson County Community College, will be the primary B team coach.

Sprague appreciates that he has a repertoire of players who are versatile and can shift around infield and outfield as necessary. "Kulczyk, Schultz and Padden will probably be our starting outfielders but they can also go infield. Cutter is our utility guy-he can play at any base. We have guys who can fill in at different positions; it just depends on who's pitching," said coach Sprague.

After a disappointing third-place finish at the District Tournament last year-losing to the Laurel Dodgers then Billings Blue Jays for an overall 52-8 season-the team again has its target set on winning the district and going on to the state tournament. Glasgow will host the district tournament at Bill Connors Field on July 23-26.
