Scotties Take The Top This Weekend

Glasgow boys and girls both came out on top in the team rankings at the Hinsdale Invitational track meet held at the Glasgow High School track this past weekend. The boys earned first place with a total point tally of 156 and the girls with a total of 199.33 points.

"We're really proud of the kids. I think overall, we're seeing a ton of competitive athletes from Eastern Montana," Coach Tim Phillips said, reflecting on the day. "There are some really talented athletes from Class C, and it's always fun to watch the best from all classes compete."

Adding to the list of state qualifiers, Amy Breigenzer, a senior trackster, qualified in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.78, and Trevor Toavs qualified in the discus with a throw of 138-feet 10-inches, although Coach Wade Nelson initially told Toavs he threw a 143-feet and enjoyed a good laugh at Toavs' reaction.

At press time, Glasgow is hosting the Top Ten track meet. The Scotties have 15 athletes participating. Some of the team will be participating in multiple events, although in an effort to keep some of the athletes safe from injury, not all that are eligible will be competing.

For the distance events, Josie Braaten and Walker Allen will compete in the 3200-meter run, Gabe Hallock will race in the 1600-meter run, and Amanda Wolff and Brinlie Nielsen will both compete in the 800-meter run.

The shorter sprints will include Luke Breigenzer in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, Ethan Etchart in the 110-meter hurdles, and Benji Phillips in the 100-meter dash. For girls, Amy Breigenzer will compete in the 100-meter hurdles; Jordan Kulczyk in the 100-meter dash.

In field events, Trevor Toavs will throw the discus and Benji Phillips will toss the javelin. Dana Hughes will be throwing the discus for the Glasgow girls and she will share the weight of the shot put event with Leinie Hughes. Chase Fossum and Amy Breigenzer will both take on the triple jump and Jordan Kulczyk will represent the team in the girls long jump.

The short relay will be run by Trent Herbert, Ethan Etchart, Chase Fossum and Benji Phillips for the boys. Amy Breigenzer, Jordan Kulczyk, Alex Simensen and Amanda Wolff will run the girls short relay. The long relay will feature Luke Breigenzer, Ethan Etchart, Chase Fossum and Benji Phillips for the Scottie boys, and Jordan Kulczyk, Brinlie Nielsen, Alex Simensen and Amanda Wolff for the girls.

"We are expecting some stellar performances", said Coach Phillips, "I think both the Class A and B schools are looking to see more athletes qualify for state. The relays should be really interesting."

The Wolf Point invitational track meet will be this Saturday, May 2. Phillips plans on taking most of the team to participate in that meet so they can get a preview of what district will be like, as the district track meet will also be in Wolf Point on May 9. The Divisional track meet will be held in Glasgow the following weekend on May 16.
