Another First And Qualifier For GHS

Andrew McKean / For The Courier

Here she comes. Emily Kolstad set a school record for Glasgow eighth-graders in the 400 meters last Friday in Wolf Point. Above, she runs in the 200 meters with Glasgow girls Ashlyn Aten and Alexis Nistler behind her. See story, Page 2B.

It's on to the Sidney Invitational for the Scottie track teams after a week in which the girls took another team first, Chase Fossum qualified for State in a second event, and team members tried a bit of this and that at the inaugural Scottie Qualifers Meet.

At the Baker Invitational last Saturday, the girls tied for first among 15 teams with Forsyth at 84 points, two points ahead of the host team. The boys placed fourth in their 15-team field, behind Sidney, Miles City and Jordan.

Fossum qualified for State in the high jump with a first-place jump of 6 feet after having previously qualified in the long jump. Other qualifiers for the Scotties so far are Dana Hughes in shot put and discuss, Benji Phillips in javelin and Josie Braaten in the 3,200 meters.

Braaten enjoyed another nice showing at Baker, winning the 1,600 meters in 5:46.44 and the 3,200 meters in 12:23.60.

Amy Breigenzer won Glasgow's other first at Baker with a time of 17:15 in the 100-meter hurdles.

A number of Scotties established personal records. Here's a look:

• Andrew Fransen bettered his shot put by 7.5 inches and his javelin by 3 feet, 10 inches.

• Logan Gunderson went 9 feet in the pole vault, a 6 inch improvement.

• Gabe Hallock had an 8 second improvement in the 1,600 meters.

• Kyle Ross made the bar for the first time in pole vault.

• Trevor Toavs went from 36 feet, 2 inches to 38 feet, 3.5 inches in the shot, had a PRof 124 feet, 4 inches in the javelin, and a 5 inch improvement in the triple jump to 33 feet, 7 inches.

• Amy Breigenzer set a PR of 15 feet, 3 inches in the long jump and improved 1.5 inches in the triple jump to 31 feet, 7 inches.

• Andrea Hansen went from 22 feet, 1.5 inches, to 27 feet, 1.75 inches, in the shot; from 67 feet, 2 inches to 70 feet, 6 inches in discuss; and from 57 feet, 4 inches, to 60 feet, 8 inches, in javelin.

• Jordan Kulczyk went from 76 feet, 5 inches, to 89 feet, 3 inches, in javelin.

• The boys 4x100m relay team went from 46.71 to 45.86 seconds.

• The girls 4x100m relay team went from 54.68 to 54.36 seconds.

Meanwhile, no Scotties qualified for State at the Scotties Qualifiers Meet on Monday, but a bunch of them set PRs:

• Gabe Hallock enjoyed a huge PR in the 1,600 meters at 5:03.90 – 21 seconds better from just 2 days ago.

• The boys 400-meter relay team moved up 2 tenths and are only .34 from qualifying for State. "A day of good handoffs in Sidney should get it," coach Tim Phillips said.

• Joe Doney set a personal best by over 2 feet in the shot put at 36 feet, 7 inches.

• Trent Herbert went from 37 feet, 1.5 inches, to 37 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump.

• Karissa Liebelt went from 26 feet, 3.5 inches, in the triple jump to 26 feet, 11inches, and increased her long jump by half an inch. Said Phillips: "She's been fighting some shin and foot issues, so it was good to see her progress."

• Morgan Guttenberg went 3.5 inches farther in her long jump to go 13 feet, 10.5 inches.

• Hannah Mickelson went 5.5 inches farther in the long jump to 10 feet, 7 inches.

• Jordan Kulczyk and Amy Breigenzer just barely scratched on state qualifying long jumps.

• Kaylee King improve to 4 feet, 4inches in the high jump.

• Jordan Kulczyk lettered with a 94 foot, 9 inch, javelin throw, 5 feet, 6 inches farther than on Saturday.

• Hannah Mickelson improved 2 feet to 59 feet, 4 inches, in the javelin.

• Andrea Hansen heaved the discuss 4 feet, 6 inches farther than her old PR.

• Fallon Larsen improved by 24 seconds in the mile to 7:14.

• DesRea Dible was 13 seconds faster in the 800 meters to 2:59.

• Brinlie Nielsen was 14 seconds faster in the 800 meters in 2:36.

Team results weren't kept at the qualifer. Other team participating included Saco, Poplar, Wolf Point, Hays/Lodge Pole, Plentywood, Rocky Boy, Nashua, Frazer, Poplar, Medicine Lake, Harlem, Hinsdale and Lustre Christian.

Some Scotties tried alternative events that they usually don't compete in, but Phillips said no performances "really stuck out (for future consideration), except maybe in the boys 1600-meter relay. Both Walker Allen and Gabe Hallock ran great legs for their first time on it this year, so I was happy with that."
