Another First And Qualifier For GHS

It's on to the Sidney Invitational for the Scottie track teams after a week in which the girls took another team first, Chase Fossum qualified for State in a second event, and team members tried a bit of this and that at the inaugural Scottie Qualifers Meet.

At the Baker Invitational last Saturday, the girls tied for first among 15 teams with Forsyth at 84 points, two points ahead of the host team. The boys placed fourth in their 15-team field, behind Sidney, Miles City and Jordan.

Fossum qualified for State in the high jump with a first-place jump of 6 feet after having previously qualified in the long jump. Other qualifiers for the Scotties so far are Dana Hughes in shot put and discuss, Benji Phillips in javelin and Josie Braaten in the 3,200 meters.

Braaten enjoyed another nice showing at Baker, winning the 1,600 meters in 5:46.44 and the 3,200 meters in 12:23.60.

Amy Breigenzer won Glasgow's other first at Baker with a time of 17:15 in the 100-meter hurdles.

• Logan Gunderson went 9 feet in the pole vault, a 6 inch improvement.

• Gabe Hallock had an 8 second improvement in the 1,600 meters.

• The girls 4x100m relay team went from 54.68 to 54.36 seconds.

Meanwhile, no Scotties qualified for State at the Scotties Qualifiers Meet on Monday, but a bunch of them set PRs:

• The boys 400-meter relay team moved up 2 tenths and are only .34 from qualifying for State. "A day of good handoffs in Sidney should get it," coach Tim Phillips said.

• Joe Doney set a personal best by over 2 feet in the shot put at 36 feet, 7 inches.

• Trent Herbert went from 37 feet, 1.5 inches, to 37 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump.

• Karissa Liebelt went from 26 feet, 3.5 inches, in the triple jump to 26 feet, 11inches, and increased her long jump by half an inch. Said Phillips: "She's been fighting some shin and foot issues, so it was good to see her progress."

Team results weren't kept at the qualifer. Other team participating included Saco, Poplar, Wolf Point, Hays/Lodge Pole, Plentywood, Rocky Boy, Nashua, Frazer, Poplar, Medicine Lake, Harlem, Hinsdale and Lustre Christian.

Some Scotties tried alternative events that they usually don't compete in, but Phillips said no performances "really stuck out (for future consideration), except maybe in the boys 1600-meter relay. Both Walker Allen and Gabe Hallock ran great legs for their first time on it this year, so I was happy with that."
