Scotties Have That Spring In Their Step

'S' words are in season at 1 Scottie Pride Drive.

Spring. Scotties. Sports. Startup.

The GHS track and field, softball and golf teams opened their spring sports practices Monday.

The golfers teed off at 3:45 p.m. at El Cor Del Lanes. Softball players reported at 6 at GHS. And the tracksters, under first-year head coach Tim Phillips, gathered at 3:45, hit the track for some drills and took to Scottie Pride Drive to run the hills.

"I'm just excited for the opportunity," Phillips told The Courier. "Our plan is continue (former coach John) LaBonty's philosophy: We're going to have a lot of fun while still helping the kids to work hard, and to work smart, to achieve our goals.

"We're going to miss John and all the experience he brought to the position. We've kept in touch quite a bit, and right now he is sounding stronger than ever and feeling great. He's still very interested in what's going on in Glasgow and to us is still a very important part of our staff, even if he's across the state."

Phillips broke down his team's 2015 staff, coach by coach:

Wade Nelson – Shot Put,

Discus, Javelin

"Wade has been a Scottie track coach since 2000. He's very busy coaching all three throws, but he's had great results, especially with the boys javelin in recent years."

Kayla Larson – Hurdles,

High Jump, Relays

"Kayla has added a ton of enthusiasm for us. She joined us in 2013. She had some great results while coaching the hurdles in Wyoming a few years ago."

Dan Johnson – Sprints, Relays

"Dan came on as a volunteer at the last minute when coach LaBonty got sick last year and gave us some great ideas in the sprints, and he was an important part of Ryan Grandchamp's 100- and 200-meter wins at State."

Deron Galston – Pole Vault

"We recruited Deron at the last minute last year. We're looking forward to a great progression of pole vaulters with him."

Pat Menge – Long Jump,

Triple Jump

"Pat is his first year with us, taking over for coach Dave Rogenes. He's come up a bit this winter to work with a few of the kids on plyometrics. He was a great jumper for Saco and brings a lot of knowledge of the jumps."

Phillips said Rogenes "has taken on a different job and is not able to be here full time. But when he's available, he'll be at the track helping out."

Emily Braaten – Distance

"Emily was a talented runner in both Glasgow cross country and track. She has offered to help out with the distance runners as a volunteer. She'll add quality input for our distance runners."
