Girls Advance To Divisionals

The Scotties ended the District 2B Girls Basketball Tournament in the same place they began it. The third seed went 2-1 at the tourney, placing third and advancing to Divisionals at Malta.

Their reward is a matchup Thursday with the Fairfield, which saw its historic 120-win streak end this month and placed second to Choteau in the 1B District tourney.

"We don't have anything to lose," Glasgow coach Jon Kolstad told The Courier. "The girls aren't starstruck. I think we'll be fine."

The Scotties went 2-1 in the District tourney at Wolf Point – beating Poplar and Harlem, losing to Wolf Point – and have improved to 10-11 on the season after a slow start in which the young team was coming together.

At District, Glasgow went ahead for good midway in the first quarter in its 58-33 opening win over Poplar.

Post player Leinie Hughes put up a huge game with a team-leading 20 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 6 of 17 from the floor and 8 of 11 at the line.

Also scoring for Glasgow were Abbi Kolstad with 19 points, Khloe Krumwiede and Amanda Wolff with 5 each, Jordan Kulczyk and Lexi Nixdorf with 4 each and Delaney Holzworth with 2.

Angel Bighorn led Poplar with 11 points.

The Scotties were denied a District championship opportunity when Wolf Point rallied late to beat them, 47-42, in the semifinals. Glasgow trailed 15-8 after one quarter and 24-18 at the half, but went ahead 32-31 after a big third quarter and led with 2:20 left in the fourth.

When GHS had trouble converting on layups as the clock ticked down, the Lady Wolves capitalized.

Scoring for Glasgow were Abbi Kolstad with 10, Hughes 9, Krumwiede 8, Wolff 7, Kulczyk 4 and Holzworth and Tyra Johnson with 2 each. Kulczyk played strong off the boards, pulling down 8 rebounds. Kolstad and Krumwiede had 6 each and Johnson 5.

Leading Wolf Point were Emma Gourneau with 13 points and Ky'Lee Driftwood 10.

The Scotties earned their way to Divisionals with a hard-fought 49-37 victory over scrappy Harlem. Both teams gave their all. It was 41-37 with about a minute left, and then Harlem had to start fouling.

Glasgow's success at the free throw line made a difference. The Scotties shot 13 of 16 there and Harlem 8 of 20.

Scoring for Glasgow were Kolstad with 17 points, Wolff 10, Kulczyk 8, Hughes and Johnson 6 each and Nixdorf 2.

Kisha Cliff led Harlem with 9 points.

The game was delayed several minutes in the fourth quarter when Lady Wildcat Mary Arrow fell under Harlem's basketball, her head slamming loudly onto the floor. She was removed on a stretcher and received an ovation when she acknowledged the cheering crowd with her hand.

At Divisionals, coach Kolstad said his team will try to put pressure on Fairfield and compete. The winner will plays the winner of the game between 2B champion Malta and Cut Bank, while the losers will face each other.

Also at Divisional are Wolf Point and Plentywood from 2B and Choteau and Conrad from 1B. It was Choteau that ended Fairfield's win streak and won the 1B tournament.
