Throw Out The Records From Here On Out

Scotties Trying T Position Themselves Properly For Tournament Season

The Scottie boys are playing some improved ball as they approach their last weekend of the regular season and the District 2B Tournament next week.

With Poplar coming to town Friday and Wolf Point on Saturday, G-Town is 8-0 in the division, 15-1 overall and No. 2 in Montana behind 16-0 Choteau in the MaxPreps Class B basketball rankings.

This weekend's games are important although 2B rivals Poplar (3-5, 8-8) and Wolf Point (4-4, 7-9) are nowhere near the Scotties in the standings. You can throw out the records in these games, just as Glasgow will do from here on out in the postseason but for a different reason.

This, Scottie fans, is tuneup time.

"We're doing some conditioning, shortening practices a bit, trying to finalize what we're doing as a team," Braaten said. "We're just trying to fine-tune things this week ... Saturday will be a tough one with Wolf Point, plus it's Senior Night. It will be emotional for the seniors and we'll have to overcome that, but it's good preparation for the district tournament. Everything will be preparation for the next two, three and hopefully four weeks."

Here's your boys basketball playoff schedule: District starts Feb. 14 at Wolf Point, Northern B Divisional on March 5 at Shelby, and State on March 12 at Great Falls Expo Park.

In the meantime, the Scotties continue to work on correcting flaws on the offensive and defensive sides.

Braaten said his team needs to stop the dribble drive, with teams beating it on the perimeter and then dishing the ball back for 3-point shots – which forces Glasgow to scramble too much defensively.

And though 6-5 Chase Fossum has been playing bigger of late with his mates getting the ball to him inside, Braaten said the Scotties also need to work "inside-out" better – getting in and then passing back for their own 3-pointers. The play doesn't need to end inside.

"We can work inside-out first," he said. "We're beginning to recognize that. We're getting there. I just hope we can all play to our potential at the right time. The goal, of course, is to get to the state tournament. But we try to take it one game and one quarter at time."

Against Harlem (4-4, 8-8) last Friday, the Scotties pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Wildcats, 79-63. Glasgow led 25-16 after a quarter, but Harlem closed to within 41-35 at the half and 54-52 after three quarters.

"The thing is, when you look at video, we had chance to put them away early," Braaten said. "We took some shots that weren't necessarily the best thing to do, and that enabled them to get back in the game and even take the lead. We went on a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter and came back, so that was a good thing to go through."

Fossum led GHS with 24 points. Also scoring were Jason Thibault with 21, Keil Krumwiede 14, Jake Page 11, Jake Kolstad 8 and Zach Miller 1.

Tristan Gone led the Cats with 24. Also scoring for them were Corbin Brockie and Keahna Little with 11 each, Dutch Helgeson 10, Michael Butterfly 4 and Marcus Henry 3.

Saturday night in Plentywood (0-8, 2-14) went as expected with a convincing Glasgowvictory, 66-18.

Scoring for Glasgow were Thibault with 14, Krumweide 11, Kolstad 10, Page 9, Fossum 6, Miller 5, Gage Legare 5, Chase Hughes 3, Ethan Etchart 2 and Trent Herbert 1.

Plentywood scoring: Justin March 7, Austin Wirtz 5, Andrew Eberling 3, Tyler Michaels 3.

GHS health report: Braaten says Page's knee is getting stronger, Legare's ankle is recovering, and Fossum was home sick Tuesday with some sort of bug.
