Wrestlers Get A First

Scotties Tops Among 14 Teams At Harlem; It's Malta Time This Weekend

The foundation is firming up. The rebuilding Scottie wrestling program has a first place tropy in hand from last week's Harlem Invitational.

In a full-fledged Class B-C wrestling tournament, the Scotties earned an A.

GHS placed first among the 14 schools at last Saturday's Harlem Invitational with 115 points, edging Chinook by a point. All but one team, the Havre JV, were of B-C pedigree like the Dawgs.

Three Scotsmen won individual titles: Mick Reyling pinned Poplar's Angel Boyd in 3:59 at 126, Cody King decisioned Cut Bank's Randon Anderson 14-8 at 138, and Joe Doney pinned Harlem's Denton Cornell in 2:25 at 285

Glasgow coach Jory Casterline told The Courier that the tournament wasn't as stacked as some that the Scotties have competed at this year, such as the CMR Holiday Invitational or the Cowboy in Miles City, but some state champs were in the field and the Scotties "avenged some losses from earlier in the year."

"We had a good weekend," Casterline said.

Throw in Glasgow's showing Friday at the Chinook Mixer and Casterline said the team is showing across-the-board progress, winning decisions by wider margins, getting more pins and losing by narrower scores.

"Those guys just went out and wrestled smart and physical and won the matches when they needed to to," he said. "We just keeping wrestling physical and good things happen. If we can continue to do that the next three weeks, we'll be fine."

That would be the three weeks that end Feb. 13-14 with State at MetraPark in Billings.

"We've gotta keep working on upsetting people to secure seeding for Divisional and then get some upsets at Divisional," Casterline said.

This weekend brings the Malta Mixer on Friday and the Malta Invitational on Saturday, the last scheduled competitions before Divisional on Feb. 7 at Shepherd.

"It's a last shot at some division opponents to do well," the coach said.

The Malta invite is another B-C meet, with the exception of the Havre JV being there. Choteau, the state's top rated B team, will be in the house.

The Scotties remain ninth among Class B for a second week in the state B/C rankings released last night. Three individual Scotsmen also been fixtures in the power poll lately: Kasey Seyfert fourth at 120, Cody King fourth at 138 and Joe Doney third at 285.
