Fort Peck Speaker O'Neill: "I Shot Bin Laden'

The Memorial Day celebration in Fort Peck this year brought hundreds together to hear various speakers at the podium. The keynote speaker at the event, Robert O'Neill, spoke about brotherhood, camaraderie and remembering those who didn't come home. What no one knew at the time is that he was the man who made world history in recent years.

He spoke out last week, stating that he pulled the trigger in May 2011 to end Osama bin Laden's life.

O'Neill, part of Navy SEAL Team 6 that stormed the property of al-Qaeda's leader, spoke to media sources to confirm a report in a British tabloid. The Butte native created a firestorm of criticism for speaking out, as well as honors from those who have been thanking him for taking out the terrorist group leader.

O'Neill has been a motivational speaker in more recent times. He's also known to have rescued Capt. Richard Phillips from pirates in 2009, an event that turned into a movie with the leading role played by actor Tom Hanks.

He reportedly told the Washington Post that he decided to step forward with his story after speaking at a gathering of 9/11 family members at the new national memorial. He said that the emotional event led him spontaneously to talk about how bin Laden died.
