Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Brent W. Magill

Brent W. Magill departed his earthly dwelling for his final adventure on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, with his loving companion, Pat Hallett, at his side.

He was the eldest child of four born to Walter H. and Josephine Alice (Russell) Magill, born on June 2, 1934, in Sheridan, Wyo. His brother, Keith, joined him three years later and their sister, Karen, followed in another year after the family relocated to Cheyenne, Wyo. That was the beginning of a childhood that covered many towns in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.

Sister Sandy arrived after they moved once again, this time to Cody, Wyo. He had childhood memories of family picnics at Devils Tower, Wyo., and special memories of life-long friendships formed in Greybull, Wyo., in the mid-40s and in Aztec, N.M., in the early 50s. Vacations were special times spent in Clark, Colo., at the grandparent Magill's ranch.

Brent's father was a surveyor for oil companies, which led to the family's nomadic life. The continuous disruption of changing schools, often mid-year, was a constant in Brent's life, but it provided a wealth of education/experience never taught in schools. At two years of age, he was taken seriously ill with rheumatic fever that damaged his heart. He loved playing football but was not allowed to participate in the sport with the weakened heart. The highlight of his senior year was when he managed to get a doctor's permission without parental knowledge and played on the Aztec varsity football team.

He graduated from Aztec High School in 1953. While still in high school and after graduation, he worked in the New Mexico oil fields for several years. He always said the only reason he came to Glasgow was to join his family for Christmas and he never left! In 1969, he graduated from Northern Montana College in Havre, majoring in drafting and also obtained a degree in construction engineering. He then taught VoTech/Industrial Arts at Glasgow High School for several years before his employment with the City of Glasgow as the Assistant Public Works director/engineer. Upon his father, Walter Magill's retirement, Brent followed in his footsteps by assuming the Public Works director/engineer position.

In 1993, he retired from the City of Glasgow. He loved to hunt and spent outings with friends and his brother-in-law, Curt Dassonville. He especially enjoyed boating and the time spent at his cabin at Ft. Peck Lake. You could always find Brent accompanied by his faithful dog, Cuda.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Keith Magill.

Survivors include his companion of 25 years, Pat Hallet, as well as her children and grandchildren; his sisters, Karen Dassonville and her husband, Curtis; their daughters and families, Sandy Wolczak and son and family; sister-in-law Linda Magill, son and daughter and family; and many cousins.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua, followed by interment in the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow.

Bell Mortuary of Glasgow was in charge of arrangements.
