Glasgow XC: Girls 4th, Boys 9th At State

Braaten, Wolff All-State For Girls; Allen Leads Boys With Season Best

Glasgow XC fell short of its team goals at State last Saturday in Helena, but they returned home with some individual accomplishments to celebrate and build upon.

Seniors Josie Braaten and Amanda Wolff turned in All-State times for the girls, Braaten placing eighth in 19:52 and Wolff 13th in 20:24 over the 3 miles at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

Junior Walker Allen clocked his season best time, 17:49, to lead the boys and place 30th.

Scottie coach Rod Karst also noted that five underclassmen turned in their second best times of the year on the big stage at State. The Fab Five include Faith Sallee at 23:46 for the girls and these boys: Kasey Seyfert in 18:41, Chase Hughes in 18:47, Braden Meland in 19:06 and Logan Gunderson in 20:31.

As a team, the Scotties ran into tough competition, maybe stronger than they expected.

The girls placed fourth, ending their run of state titles at four. The boys finished ninth, nearly 5 minutes out of the Top 3 podium showing that they felt was within reach.

For the girls, champion Manhattan, runner-up Red Lodge and third place Bigfork were just too much.

Balanced Manhattan won with 91 points, its top five runners grouped from 11 to 27, to win comfortably. Red Lodge was second at 131 and Bigfork, powered by the fastest two girls at State, was third at 134. Glasgow was the only other team under 200 at 182.

Bigfork's top two runners blistered the course. Makena Morley was first in 16:33 and Bryn Morley second in 16:59, 2 minutes faster than Lame Deer's third place Tamia Two Moons.

In boys competition, another Morley, Logan, dominated. He won in 15:29, 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Tyus Mendoza of Colstrip. No other boys cracked 16 minutes.

Red Lodge was first with 74 points among teams, Manhattan second with 86 and Broadwater third at 133. Glasgow was ninth at 289, 4 points behind familiar foe Harlem at eighth.
