Fighting Cancer Again

I am writing this column from Billings, where I am undergoing five radiation treatments. The drug I was taking to keep my breast cancer at bay failed. I was told by two oncologists that some active cancer cells developed a resistance to the drug, allowing them to travel to my right hip.

After tests and discussion, it was decided to give me two new medicines and do five days of radiation.

This development was totally unexpected. I had been having quite a bit of pain in my right leg. On Oct. 4, I went to the ER because I couldn't handle the pain anymore. An ultrasound of the right leg revealed a large blood clot in the calf. A CT scan showed something was in the hip joint. I was admitted to the hospital and put on a regimen of medication to make the blood clot start dissolving.

After spending several days in the hospital, I was released and referred to doctors in Billings.

The past few days I've met a lot of people who are fighting some type of cancer. Every person I've talked with who is going through their own battle with this disease has been upbeat, positive, determined, and exhibited a great deal of courage.

They have been open and frank about their fight and how they are handling it. As each person who completes their radiation treatment leaves the waiting room, others say, "I wish you the best. Good luck with your treatment."

Hearing this said many times over gives me hope and encouragement and makes me even more determined to win my fight.

The staff is very caring and compassionate and are always asking how they can help you feel more comfortable during treatment. You can tell from the tone of their voice that they are truly concerned about you and want to help you recover.

The outpouring of support I've received after letting it be known I am again fighting cancer has been overwhelming. It's a hard journey but one made easier knowing how many people are thinking of me and praying for me.

A kind word, a hug, a prayer, a card, a phone call – these all combine to lift my spirits and keep me doing my very best to once again be in remission.

Thank you and may God bless all of you as richly as I've been blessed.
