Hazen 'Flick' Flickinger

Hazen D. “Flick” Flickinger, 81, of Billings and formerly of Havre, passed away peacefully at home on Friday afternoon, Sept. 19, 2014, from extended illnesses.

He was born July 25, 1933, to Hazen D. and Ethel (Goodrich) Flickinger in Scobey, Mont. The family farmed and resided near Opheim, where he attended school and graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1951.

Soon after graduation, he began his life-long career spanning 41 years with the Montana State Highway Department. In 1964, he received his civil engineering degree from MSU that led to positions of state bridge inspector, head of road construction and maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 1993.

He married the love of his life, Dorothy Jones, on Dec. 23, 1956. They were blessed with a daughter, Rene, in 1968. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, always willing to lend a hand.

The Flickinger family made a home in Havre for over 25 years. After retirement, he and Dorothy relocated to Billings in 2005 to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. He loved to travel and had many adventures to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazen D. and Ethel Flickinger; two sisters, Opal Bourassa and Charlotte Flickinger, and one brother, Dale Flickinger.

Survivors include Dorothy, his loving wife of 58 years; one daughter, Rene Freitag, and her husband, Corby, of Billings; two grandchildren, Cooper and Quinn; two sisters, Mary Ann Omvig of Billings and Nina (Lyle) Walstad of Opheim; one brother, Charles Flickinger and his wife, Eileen, of Opheim; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Shiloh Methodist Church in Billings.
