Hi-Line 13U Squad Takes Third Place In State Tournament

They did not win the state championship, but the Hi-Line 13U baseball team certainly was the best of the east this season.

Taking third place behind Glacier (the eventual champion) and Kalispell, the Hi-Line 13U team's season came to an end, while the top two finishers advance onto the Regionals in Helena this weekend.

The Hi-Line 13U was composed of 10 players from Glasgow and three from Nashua, Wolf Point and Scobey.

They competed with teams from Havre, Lewistown, Miles City, Belgrade, Kalispell, and Glacier in the Montana 13U State Tournament on the Havre Legion's field from July 24 to 27.

The Hi-Liners came through the back door to win third place, fighting hard after losing to Glacier 14-3 in the opening round.

With the double elimination format and no pool play, Hi-Line went on a hot hitting streak while locking down on defense.

The performance saw the Hi-Liners win their next three games beating Miles City 18-2, Lewistown 14-2, and Belgrade 7-1, featuring several double plays and an infield home run by Kaden Fossum.

In their final action of the tournament, a loser-out against Kalispell, cool bats early in the game plus fielding errors later cost them the opportunity to advance to the Regionals.

The game was a closer match-up than the 17-7 loss showed.

Down 8-2 going into bottom of the fifth inning, Hi-Line got their bats going and caught up to 8-7.

However, Kalispell capitalized on consecutive base hits and fielding errors, and blew the game open by scoring 9 runs at the top of the sixth inning.
