Donnie Bailey and Steve Fauth competed at the State Special Olympics Games in Billings. On Wednesday morning they bowled at 8 a.m. Steve got a fourth place ribbon in his division and Donnie got a fifth place ribbon in his division.
They attended the athletes dinner at the Montana Pavilion after which they along with their coach, Janet Bailey marched into the Rimrock Auto Arena with all other athletes from across the state at the Opening Ceremonies.
Thursday was a free day for them. On Friday morning Donnie Bailey and his parents/coaches Jim and Janet Bailey and his uncle Bob Bergstrom attended the Closing Ceremonies at the Laurel High School. Donnie had been selected to be a member of the Norbie Nascar Challenge Pit Crew for selling more than 100 tickets on the Chevrolet Pickup. Bob Norbie is the president of Special Olympics Montana. In the Nascar Challenge Mr. Norbie sat in a race car (cardboard) with his arms and legs sticking out. The Pit Crew had to put a tire on each limb while one member (Donnie) cleaned the windshield (the glass part of his racing helmet) with a spray bottle of water and a cloth while another put gas in the car (twinkies in Norbies mouth). There were 4 crews and they were timed in the event.
Before the Torch was extinguished and passed on to the Missoula Police Department, the raffle drawing was held. No one from Eastern Montana was a winner. The pickup went to someone from Victor and the four-wheel ATV went to someone in Great Falls.
Following the closing ceremonies the track and field events were held at the Laurel track complex. Donnie received the silver medal in the 100 meter walk.
The Opheim track teams participated in the District Track Meet in Wolf Point on Wednesday, May 14.
Track and Field
The junior-high girls tied for 1st place with Whitewater. They are Tia Hallock, Haylee Fauth, Shelby Fuhrmann and Kortney Nelson. Tia placed third in the 100, second in the 200 and second in the 400, first in the 100 meter hurdles and first in the 200 hurdles.
Haylee placed first in the 1,600, fourth in the 100 hurdles, fourth in long jump and second in the high jump. Kortney got sixth in the 400, first in the 800 and fifth in the long jump.
The junior high boys came in third. They are Cade Anderson, CJ Nelson, Tevan Fuhrman and Thomas Fry. The top eight finishers in each high school event go on to Divisionals this week. Opheim team members going on to Divisionals are Emalee Fry, Grace Carroll, Tyra Fuhrman, Ashley Carroll and Kira Rosencrans.
In the long jump Ashlee and Emalee both qualified for Divisionals. Ashlee jumped 125.3 for fifth place and Emalee jumped 121.5 for eighth place.
In the shot put Grace placed fourth with a throw of 25.0 and Kira placed seventh with a throw of 22.4. In the Discus Tyra placed third with a throw of 75.5 and Kira placed seventh with a throw of 71.4.
Grace placed third in the 300 hurdles with 68.2 and Emalee placed third in the 100 hurdles with 20.2.
Baseball
Two young men from Opheim are playing baseball with the Scobey Giants in the Hi-Line Babe Ruth Baseball League this year. They are CJ Nelson and Adler Morgan. The Giants defeated Glasgow's Farm Equipment Sales team last Sunday by a score of 10-3.
The Giants raced out to a 4-0 lead after one inning after the first three batters, Jace Schumacher, CJ Nelson and Trevor Girard walked and Spencer Rush his a double and all scored.
Opheim's Nelson pitched a six-inning complete game (the 2-hour time limit format had expired before it could go seven innings). He allowed three hits, six walks and struck out 10.
