Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Now I Remember

It is so great to have readers call. I now know, and have committed to memory, the name of the grocery on 3rd Avenue North.

It was the Northside Grocery, run by Lennie Bollinger. I am going to assume that it later moved to the current Dale Plumbing location and became part of Gordon's Foods.

So many of us still have special memories of the little local grocery, spending our penny or maybe a whole nickel on candy, or maybe the slicing of the lunch meat for our sandwich.

One of my readers also called to say there were a couple of groceries located in the Free Lots, at lease they remembered buying candy bars there and assumed they also had a line of groceries.

And my mind jumps to another thought. Not meaning to be “politically incorrect,” but just why was the Valley Addition called the Free Lots. Was this area not within the city limits and maybe available to anyone wishing to erect a dwelling? Of course I would guess that meant having your own water and sewer. or outhouse – as many of us had.

Gwen welcomes your memories at 367-5582.
