Glasgow XC Teams Heading To State; Girls Seek Sweet 16th Championship, Boys Want To ‘Podium’

After a challenging cross country meet in Roundup, the Scottie girls and boys teams will compete in the state meet this Saturday, Oct. 26, at Missoula

The Scottie varsity girls – the defending state champions – took first at Roundup with 42 points and Colstrip was second with 88. The Scottie boys placed fourth (108), behind Red Lodge (23), Plenty Coups (104) and Colstrip (106).

Senior Emma Fewer has this to say about the performance: “The Roundup meet was a good chance to see new competition from the Southern B schools. It kind of gave us a reality check for this weekend. It definitely prepared us for state better.”

Individually for the girls, Josie Braaten took second with a time of 20:19. Other Scottie girls crossed the finish line in this order with these times: Rachael Zeiger 21:52 (7th), Fewer 21:59 (9th), Amanda McDonald 22:12 (11th), Amanda Wolff 22:33 (13th), Ellen Walstad 22:51 (17th) and Alex Simensen 23:14 (20th).

These girls will be representing the Scotties at State. Julia Kolstad will be the alternate.

Zeiger, a senior, said the Roundup “course was physically demanding and therefore our times were not as fast as we were hoping.”

When asked about this coming weekend at State, she said, “The team is excited for State! Our goals are set high, but I have faith in all my teammates. It should be a fun weekend.”

Julia Kolstad crossed the finish line first with a time of 23:36 for the JV girls, followed by Faith Sallee (2nd) with a time of 24:36; Brinlie Nielsen (3rd) 24:56; Mary Fewer (4th) 25:23 and Kerry Hoffman (5th) with a time of 25:59.

The girls cross country team scores are as follows: Glasgow 42, Colstrip 88, Red Lodge 103, St. Labre 138, Huntley Project 148 and Roundup 154. The following schools were no-scores: Melstone, Lodge Grass, PlentyCoups, Northern Cheyenne, Joliet and Terry.

Walker Allen of the varsity boys team had this to say: “The times weren’t our best and the course was tough but it was a good look at our competition and we placed good overall … We have a competitive team and I am looking forward to State. I feel like if we all push to stay up there and together, we have a good shot at placing at state.”

The scores from Roundup for the boys were as follows: Red Lodge (23), Plenty Coups (104), Colstrip (106), Glasgow (108), St. Labre (109), Huntley Project (165), Columbus (171), Joliet (248), Roundup (251), and the no-scores were Lodge Grass, Melstone, and Northern Cheyenne.

Bridger Sanders finished first for the Scotties in 13th place with a time of 18:39. Following him were Walker Allen (16th) 18:44, Matthew Phillips (18th) 19:04, Kasey Seyfert (27th) 20:25, Braden Meland (34th) 20:41, Chase Hughes (44th) 21:20 and Ethan Jamba (52nd) 22:02.

These boys will be running in Missoula at State. Logan Gunderson will be the alternate.

As for the JV boys, Gunderson crossed the line in seventh with a time of 23:11 and Tony Kaiser eighth with a time of 23:32. Andrew Franzen is part of the team as well, but hasn’t been able to participate in the last few meets because of an injury and will not be able to run at State.

“All the times this last weekend in Roundup were a little slower than expected, but I think it’ll give us a little more motivation to excel at state,” Seyfert said. “This year we are really trying hard to podium so all of us are trying our hardest in practice and really cheering each other on.”
