Board Hires Teachers, Coaches

The Glasgow School Board hired two teachers at the regular meeting on June 12. Lily Himsl and Kevin Alt will teach fifth grade, replacing J Billingsley, who has resigned to move to another school district.

A list of winter head coaches and fall and winter assistant coaches submitted by Willie Thibault was hired, but not named individually. The public’s interest in the board’s practice on hiring coaches was noted. The hiring procedure will be on next month’s agenda.

Trustee Dave Irving reported a good negotiated settlement with the district’s administrators. Their salaries were frozen last year. They will receive a 2 percent increase this year and 4 percent next year. The agreement was approved.

Negotiations with the teachers had a setback, Irving said, when a proposed agreement was defeated by the GEA membership on the last day of school. However there is a new proposal now that Irving hopes will be successful. The 2 percent and 4 percent increases that the administrators received will be reversed, so the 4 percent raise comes to the teachers this year, followed by a 2 percent raise. This was a suggestion by School Clerk Kelly Doornek.

The board voted to adopt the alternative project delivery method for the school construction project. A construction firm will be engaged early in the process to work with the design team, instead of following a traditional design-bid-build sequence.

Student enrollment is 823 – 20 more than last year at this time. A small class of 45 graduated and a large kindergarten class of around 70 will be coming in.
