Allen John Stuber

Allen John Stuber, 93, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, of natural causes at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Mont.

A vigil will be held Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. and funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m., both at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Glasgow. Interment will be in the Thoeny Cemetery in Thoeny.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1919, in Hinsdale, Mont., the son of Albert and Dorothea (Thoeny) Stuber. He was raised on the family homestead in Thoeny and attended school through the eighth grade in Thoeny, both in buildings built by his father and which still stand today.

He then attended and graduated from Opheim High School in 1937. During the school week, he and his brothers and sisters lived in the dormitory and did chores before and after school to help pay for room and board. He played on the Thoeny baseball team and traveled around the county playing other town teams.

After Allen’s father passed away in 1939, all the kids stepped up and took over running the daily operation of the farm along with Dorothea. One year Allen and friend hitch-hiked out to Seattle to visit old family friends that had moved out to Seattle from Thoeny in the tough years, and then continued hitch-hiking down to southern California and worked in a steel mill and started taking flying lessons. He lived with his Uncle Jake. He then moved back to the family farm, worked on the farm and then bought a bulldozer and scrapper with a partner and began building dams around Thoeny and Opheim. After a few years of the partnership, he bought out his partner and kept building many dams and small road jobs in north Valley County. Along with his brother, John, they purchased an airplane and enjoyed flying for many years.

He then moved to Glasgow and continued to grow his construction business, Stuber Construction. He worked on many large jobs in northeast Montana, including large jobs in Jordan, Zortman, the Robinson Bridge, Fort Peck, the Glasgow Air Base, Hogeland and also worked for many local farmers and businessmen. He also leveled the land for the Valley View Nursing Home and the Glasgow High School. He ran cattle for many years and was an original member of the Wittmayer Grazing Association.

On Nov. 18, 1963, he was married to Dorothy Aycock in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He loved spending time with Dorothy dancing, spending time at their cabin in Fort Peck, doing crossword puzzles and spending time in their gardens. He also built a beautiful earth home east of Glasgow that both he and Dorothy enjoyed for many years. When she became ill and moved to Valley View, he visited her and spent much time with her every day for eight months until she passed in November 2005.

He helped raise Dorothy’s children, Scotty and Cindy Aycock, and then they had their son, Mike, in 1964.

Allen and Dorothy enjoyed many years traveling with Mike’s sporting events and helping with many local sponsored baseball events.

He was a life-long member of the Elk's Club. He ran for county commissioner in the early 1960s. He was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church.

He enjoyed having coffee with his many wonderful friends at Johnnies and McDonalds. He was a guy who had many friends in Glasgow and knew all the old family names around north Valley County and who was related to who or married to someone else. His mind remained razor sharp until the day he passed. He will be missed by many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; two step-children, Scotty Aycock and Cindy Scott; three brothers, John Stuber, Tim Stuber and Franklin Stuber; and three sisters, Ruby Johnson, Esther Barnard and Mary Nurmi.

Survivors include one son, Mike Stuber, and his wife, Joni (Swedberg); two grandchildren, Jordan and Jacob Allen, all of Issaquah, Wash .; a brother, Joe Stuber, of Glasgow; a son-in-law, Kenny Scott, of Glasgow; three grandchildren, Travis and Cristal Scott of Lewistown and Jory Scott of Glasgow; and two great-grandchildren, Makayla and Tori.

Pallbearers will be Lyle Walstad, Jack Dix, Bert and Gerald Keough, Dean Barnes, Buster Stuber and Randy Cumber.
