Nashua candidates who filed to fill two open positions on the Town of Nashua’s Council during the 2024 election received a letter at the end of March stating there will no longer be an election for Nashua Town Council seats this election year. Per the letter that was sent by Valley County Election Administrator Marie Pippin, municipal elections are held in odd-numbered years, opposite the primary and general elections which are held in even-numbered years. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office will be running five elections: four School Districts and the Fort Peck Rural County Water District. These five elections are all mail-ballot elections. The ballots will be mailed to voters on Friday, April 19, and voted ballots must be received back in the election office by Tuesday, May 7, at 5 p.m. Ballots postmarked May 7 but not received until after will not be counted. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced on April 9 that 36 trail organizations, communities and various land-managing agencies throughout Montana will receive Montana Trail Stewardship Program (TSP) grant awards for their projects in 2024. Forty TSP applications were received this year from a variety of eligible applicants, including federal and state agencies, towns, cities, counties, recreational clubs and nonprofit organizations. Montana students’ proficiency in math and science ticked up by a percentage point last academic year. That’s according to the latest data gathered from schools as part of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. Reading scores remained identical to 2022’s report card. The deadline to apply for $30,000 in grant funding from the Montana Farmers Union Foundation is fast approaching on May 1. With a heavy heart the family of Curtis R. Risa notes his passing on Friday, March 8, 2024, in Billings, Mont. Curt was the third son of Pearl and Martin Risa born in 1942 in Kent, Wash., where Martin was working in the shipyards during World War II. After the war the family moved back to Opheim, Mont., and Curt became the brother to five more siblings. Curt graduated from Opheim High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1966. Jay Allen Aaberge, age 66, of St. Marie, Mont., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Opheim students put on a Reader's Theater program on April 11, where students were assigned a character and had to act out the plot for those in attendance. Reader's Theater is a collaborative strategy for developing oral reading fluency through reading parts in scripts. Both the Scottie boys and girls track teams won the Baker Invitational, beating out 19 other schools for the top slot. Vaughn Miller, Khy Gamas and Kyler Holinde earned first place finishes to lead the boys while Haleigh Huntsman, Tanae Baker and Mayzie Yoakam topped the podium on the girls side. The Scottie softball team picked up their first conference win of the 2024 season at the Lewistown Invite this past weekend when they defeated Shelby 17-0 April 13. Glasgow tied Lockwood 12-12 and defeated Stillwater 11-0 April 12 at the Invite. They also picked up a win over Class A Sidney April 9, winning 14-12 on the road.
