  • Giving Multiplied With School Supplies For Children Overseas

    For the Courier|Aug 16, 2023

As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of back-to-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents in Glasgow are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries. For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin Thomas, a s...

  • Ukrayina Cherez iPhone.

    Richard Noble, For the Courier|Mar 16, 2022

People around the world have had their eyes fixed on eastern Europe for the past number of weeks, watching the horror unfold as the conflict continues between Russia and Ukraine. But for the first time on this scale, we’re able to see an unfiltered view of what’s really happening. Rather than traditional outlets such as Fox or CNN, social media has become the platform of choice Ukrainian people are relying on to show the world what’s happening at their doorstep. How has this become the norm, then? Does it mean we’re afforded a more imparti...

  • Not Spring Yet

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Mar 16, 2022

I'm not feeling very turtle-ish yet. Let me explain: years ago Dennis and I caught a comedy routine that contained the line "Hope springs in turtles." We still occasionally use that line. I had to go look it up in order to give credit to the comedian. His name is John Bowman, and the bit came from his In Stink routine. I will caution you that his language wasn't devoid of "bad words." The bit had to do with a stoner explaining that even though turtles are "slow and pokey" since they're carrying...

  • Access Denied.

    Richard Noble, For the Courier|Mar 9, 2022

I’m in no position to speak with conviction about the atrocities currently transpiring in eastern Europe. What I am qualified to speak on however is the technical methods with which a nation might censor or otherwise control what its residents are able to see on the internet. This article will focus on those technical aspects, in an attempt to help spread knowledge about what happens when a public resource is unjustly subjected to regulation by an entity looking to further an agenda. First let’s recap on how the internet works as a whole, as...

  • Welcome March?

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Mar 9, 2022

March has arrived, coming in like a lion. We're therefore hoping spring will really be here at the end of the month. All the continued strong winds combined with fresh snow, as well as freezing sleet mixed with rain (at 24 degrees!!) has me still ignoring those seed catalogs. I have, however, purchased new gladioli bulbs, new large dahlia tubers, a couple bright pink peony roots, and several packages of onion sets. This is obviously long-range planning. All of those are being stored in our...

  • Vine Starting

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Mar 2, 2022

We had a nice trip to watch one of our grandsons play 10U AA hockey just outside Chicago over the President's Day weekend. (His team competes at the single A level, but got bumped up.) Now that I'm catching up with the mail, and specifically the Courier, I see no one took me up on writing a guest column to cover for my absence. You still could, of course... I'm trying to think spring, but the recent nasty weather hasn't helped push me that way. There was lots of fresh snow in Fargo, but the road...

  • I Want My (M)TV

    Richard Noble, For the Courier|Mar 2, 2022

It’s still very much “Indoors” season here in Glasgow, with spring still a few weeks away and the bitter cold still lingering. So it’s only natural that we’re spending more time in front of our screens. We’re drawn in a moth-like fashion, subsidizing our limited sunlight time with the artificial, Netflix-flavored variety. How then do we make the best of this time huddled in a trancelike state, fixated on the moving images before us? While seeing is believing, not all screens are actually crated equal. Between televisions, computer monitors an...

  • Browsers Can Be Choosers

    Richard Noble, For the Courier|Feb 23, 2022

The method in which we enjoy the fruits which the internet bears often slips by without so much as a casual thought. You click a thing, a webpage loads, you find what you’re looking for, you close that thing and carry on about your day. This browsing of websites is actually facilitated by a natty piece of software called, unsurprisingly, a browser. Just like we’re blessed with choices for airlines and peanut butter, we’re also able to be choosy with how we experience web pages. But what’s the difference? Aren’t we all just looking at the same...

  • What are some considerations for Senior Citizens who plan to move?

LISA BAXTER, SPECIAL TO THE COURIER|Feb 16, 2022

Two of the largest determinants of where a Senior may plan to move are their health status including whether they need assistance and what type of financial support they may need. If the Senior is married often times they may be able to live independently, however their spouse may need more support than they can provide. The cost of Independent Living Communities are on the average $2800.00 a month. The cost of Assisted Living can run over $4000.00 a month and at the highest spectrum are Nursing homes at well over $7000.00 a month. To fund...

  • A Breath of Fresh Air for Behavioral Health

Valley County Care Coalition, FOR THE COURIER|Feb 16, 2022

For far too long, there has been a stigma surrounding mental health, making it incredibly difficult for the very people who need it the most to reach out. With an estimated 44 million people living with a mental illness and around 60% of them not receiving any treatment; something needs to be done to address this topic. In recent years, change has been happening. Communities are rallying for a seat at the table and those without a voice are finding space to speak freely. Behavioral Health is now talked about more than ever and professionals in...

  • Where oh where has my little dog gone! She was there a minute ago

FRANK A. and LIN VARGO, SPECIAL TO THE COURIER|Feb 16, 2022

Who would have thought! Last week, February 7th, we were out walking around Saint Marie. We went the back way, where there are open spaces and gravel roads, there is a large amount of foundations only in that area, ages ago the homes had been moved to parts unknown in Montana. We came across Kathleen Bushy and a pup on a leash and at first… we thought she was talking to herself! Then a man’s voice called out to her but where the heck was he?!! Kathleen came up to us and told us that her friend , Dave Evans, was down in the storm drain che...

I must need a vacation from writing. I keep putting off getting this column done each week lately and so I miss the actual deadline. Luckily, the editor/manager at the Courier has been putting up with my tardiness. I am taking next week off. If someone else would like to sub in for me, I think the paper would appreciate it, maybe. And maybe you’ll have a new gig. I’d be okay with being replaced… We’re heading off to near Chicago where our youngest lives. We’re driving (well, Dennis is), so we’re very hopeful the weather will behave and that ro...
