  • Dinner Is Served

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Dec 3, 2014

The weather outside was a bit frightful, but the feast inside was delightful. After the morning's freezing rain melted, 170 plates of traditional holiday meals were served at the 24th annual Valley County Thanksgiving Day Dinner. A melting pot of folks representing this community's diversity – the needy and the fortunate, those with family here and those without, the old and the young – gathered at the Glasgow Senior Citizens Center in the American holiday's true spirit. The meals were...

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 3, 2014

One Forsyth family had a lot to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day. Their 14-year-old son, Marcus Rothwell, was lost overnight during a hunting trip that brought them to the Timber Creek area, near Wyatt Coulee and Plum Creek. Valley County Undershefiff Vern Buerkle said a large group effort in the county helped search for the boy. Search and rescue, the sheriff's office, hunters, community members, Fish, Wildlife and Parks, BLM, emergency medical services and a search dog all put efforts in to recover the boy. Marcus was to meet up with his...

  • Horn Raised Most Campaign Funding In County Races

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 3, 2014

As the year winds down to an end, voters are already putting elections behind them and looking toward those getting ready to take office. But campaign funding records are open to the public for disclosure, and funds raised went toward radio ads, print ads, window decals and signs to promote the local candidates. The funds collected totaled nearly $18,800 in Valley County. That doesn't include some of the personal contributions from the candidates themselves. Most of the final reports have been filed for funding, but a few still may turn in the...

  • Water Customers May See Refund

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 3, 2014

The Glasgow City Council met and approved to pay back water customers over the next six months after a glitch in software was found by the auditors that made their visit in November. The software was unable to convert cubic feet and gallons. The glitch only made pennies in a difference in Glasgow City billing, but over a year it added up. A total of $38,120.16 is owed and will be credited to both commercial and residential customers, just over $15,450 is owed to commercial users, the leftover $22,668 going toward residents who hooked up to...

  • Valley County Audit Response Comes In

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 3, 2014

The Valley County courthouse had visits from the auditors recently. Their responses came in with some minor suggestions. The full report is usually available after the the New Year. The auditors suggested segregated collections and budgets for the airport, refuse and weed departments. They also suggested that they consider taking a supply inventory so the county can track property and items. Another suggestion was that formal financial procedures and policies be made for the county's fair board and the health department. The county...

She was homesteaded south of Larslan and was known for cooking delicious meals and bread. She hauled water from several miles away by wagon. • Mr. Max Cousins

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Dec 3, 2014

Not long ago, I read of a high school science teacher and how he has inspired a love for science in his students. The article reminded me of my science teacher when I was a freshman. His name was Max Cousins. Of course, he was Mr. Cousins to the students. He had a deep love for teaching. When you were in his class, you were always paying attention because he presented the day's lesson in a way that made you not want to miss any part of it. As well as teaching science, he was also the assistant football coach. Besides instructing the football...

  • You Know You're A Redneck At A Mock Wedding If...

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Dec 3, 2014

Do you remember “mock weddings?” There was recently an invitation in The Courier inviting friends and relatives to attend a mock wedding and 50th anniversary celebration. It was hard for me to believe the number of people who had not heard the term “mock wedding.” Many assumed it was a renewal of wedding vows. I guess the term MOCK escaped them. I cannot believe people of the North County invented this entertainment. Surely other communities shared in the fun. Mock weddings most always took place when a couple celebrated a 25th or 50th...

  • Genalgo 'Gene' Charles Alsberg--Full Obituary

    Dec 3, 2014

I passed from a wide assortment of ailments on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014. My choice was not to have a funeral as those who knew me would understand (at age 82). My life began in Wishek, North Dakota born to Charles Frederick and Ella Alsberg (Reick), wonderful parents, on August 31, 1932. It was the Golden Era of "Children should be seen and not heard" and my sister Betty Clara (Jerry) Adams and brother John Gordon (Linda) Alsberg often joked about this. After graduation from Nashua Montana High...

  • Just Passing Through

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Dec 3, 2014

For those of us who pay attention, there is a lot of bicycle traffic along the Hi-Line and this past summer has been no exception. There are bicycles built for two. Bicycles with side cars. Tricycles with trailers. Traditional bicycles and recumbent bicycles/tricycles. Riders I have talked with...
