The walls of Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital will have a new addition in the near future due to a generous donation from a local artist. At the end of October, St. Marie resident and artist Leith DeWeese donated nine pieces in honor of her late husband, Jerry DeWeese, who passed away last December. The Valley County Health Board passed an updated health order on Nov. 16 expanding on orders issued by the governor of Montana and tightening COVID-19-prevention restrictions on crowd sizes regardless of setting, ability to social distance and whether the venue is outdoors. There have been over 700 opioid overdose fatalities in Montana since 2000. Many of those deaths were not the result of illicit drugs, but rather due to the use of prescription drugs for pain. In response, the state has sought to field overdose-reversing drugs and put them in the hands of EMTs, law enforcement and care providers to prevent those deaths. Dear Editor, It all started on a Tuesday with a high fever and then dry, hacking cough. The next day I was tested, and several days later found out I was positive for COVID-19. During the next week of stay-at-home/quarantine, the cough, fever and loss of appetite got worse. But the most alarming symptom was that I was rapidly losing my ability to get oxygen. John Kolstad, age 94, passed away from the Covid-19 virus at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital, in Glasgow, Mont., on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020. Myra Lee (Pecora) Gundermann, age 67, of Larslan, Mont., passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 in her home, surrounded by her family after a hard-fought battle with cancer. The Glasgow Ice Dawgs Bantam team hit the ice for the first time this season on Nov 6. Opening their 2020-21 season in Sidney, the team brought home one win and three losses playing with a short bench. The win came in the Dawgs’ first game against Miles City. After going down 1-0 in the first period, the team rallied back and notched two goals in the second and four in the third for a 6-1 victory. The Glasgow Ice Dawg Squirts hosted their first hockey games of the season Nov. 14 and 15 at the Valley Event Center. The Helena Big Horns took all three games from the hosts, however the coaches expressed tremendous pride in their young team, noting that some players had only been on the ice a few times before their first game. The Glasgow Ice Dawgs PeeWee team started their season in Great Falls Nov. 7 and 8. After only three practices, the Dawgs dropped their first game on Nov. 7 against the Great Falls Americans 6-3. The team traveled to Manhattan this past weekend to take on the Tigers in the semi final game to determine who would move on to the final game of the season. The Valley County Sheriff is reporting part-time Valley County resident Carl Mann drowned the morning of Nov. 20 after falling through the ice covering the Trout Pond near Fort Peck, Mont. He was 71 years old. Sheriff Tom Boyer told the Courier, Mann was out hunting when his dog traveled out onto the ice and fell through. After the dog was unable to self-rescue, Mann attempted to retrieve the dog and fell through the ice as well.
