  • Biden Intends to Rescind Keystone XL Permit

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

In yet another setback to TC Energy and the building of the Keystone XL pipeline, CBC in Canada was first to report on Jan. 17 confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden's intent to rescind the KXL pipeline permit. Biden campaigned on canceling the Canadian pipeline project, which will run through Valley County, after having opposed it during his time as Vice President under President Barack Obama. Obama punted the controversial political decision to his successor, President Donald Trump, who...

  • US DOJ Hate Crimes Forum Planned

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

The US Department of Justice will host a digital “hate crime forum” for residents of Valley County and surrounding areas on Jan. 28. The platform will present perspectives from Montana residents on their own experiences with hate crimes as well as a panel of federal, state and local law enforcement on how federal law defines hate crimes and how such crimes are treated and investigated. Glasgow Mayor Becky Erickson told the Courier that the forum was the idea of the US DOJ and that they make the offer to any Montana town. She pointed out tha...

  • Sheriff: Case in Frazer Highlights Need to Cross Deputize

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

Law Enforcement in Frazer has been a perennial enigma for the Valley County Sheriff. Due to its Tribal citizenry, Frazer has been a sort of no-go zone for county sheriff's deputies in the past, and a lack of cross-deputization between tribal law enforcement and VCSO makes enforcing the law in Frazer difficult and cumbersome. Recent efforts to give Frazer's residents a sense of security and support from the county have yielded fruit though. According to Sheriff Tom Boyer, a Jan. 8 call from a...

  • Montana Indians Deserve a Better Budget

    The Montana Indian Caucus|Jan 20, 2021

Dear Editor, Native communities have been disproportionately hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of us have lost loved ones to this virus. Many more have suffered from the reopened wounds of generational trauma that comes with a new disease hurting our people. The promise of COVID vaccines should bring our communities a sense of relief. Unfortunately, $1 billion in proposed cuts to healthcare for vulnerable populations coming out of the State Legislature drastically undermine this hope for...

  • Unions Still Matter

    Jeff C. Dibblee|Jan 20, 2021

Dear Editor, As the 67th Legislative session begins, we once again see the ugly head of the Montana Citizens for the Right to Work coalition rise. Their executive director, Mr. Randy Pope claims that our hard-working men and women of Montana are denied gainful employment because of being forced to pay union dues to the good paying jobs they wish to receive. He and the coalition want to stop organized labor and the strong union solidarity that fought so hard for the good paying jobs that so many...

  • Back in Montana

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Jan 20, 2021

We are home again after our latest trip to Florida. We spent a great deal of time down there hanging out at ice rinks, watching our grandsons playing hockey. They’re in different age groups, the older being a squirt while the younger is a mite. Both belong to the Gulf Coast Flames, and they travel a lot to play. We were in Fort Myers first, then Ellenton. This weekend they’re in Tampa and Orlando. The 8-year-old had just returned to playing after having broken his arm in October. He did that in his own driveway, not related to travel hockey...

  • Scottie Grapplers Grapple Grueling Week

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

Pretty happy. That's where coach Jory Casterline is with his wrestling squad a few weeks into the season while acknowledging the team has room for improvement. The Scottie team is adjusting to season changes made necessary by the coronavirus pandemic, including more events with fewer participants. This past week, Glasgow had three separate events: a triangular in Miles City on Thursday, a triangular in Malta on Friday and a home mixer on Saturday. "We dropped duals to two Class A schools," said...

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

The Glasgow Scottie girls basketball team reviewed their earlier losses, worked on their weak areas during practice and applied those lessons to their games this past weekend. The results were impressive - two conference wins by double digits over Harlem and Poplar. "The start of the season wasn't what we hoped for but it was nice to get a couple of wins this weekend," said Blaire Westby. "We're getting better at using each other's strengths which helps us be more successful." Leading the...

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jan 20, 2021

The Glasgow Scottie boys basketball team dropped their home game against the Harlem Wildcats on Thursday, but bounced back to take a 20-point win over the Poplar Indians on the road Saturday. Keigan Skolrud led the Scotties in scoring in both games, putting up 24 against Harlem and following it with a 32-point performance against Poplar. Against the Indians, Bergen Miller, 13 points, and Vinny Chapell, 10 points, buffeted the big man's scoring. But against Harlem at home, Skolrud was the only Sc...
