Secretary of State Corey Stapleton has awarded HAVA Election Security Grants to counties throughout the state, including Valley County, to assist them in purchasing the new ExpressVote voting system. The system will utilize touch-screen technology to produce a paper record for tabulation. Dear Editor, In the late 19th century, bird populations in the United States declined drastically. That was obvious. William T. Hornaday, director of the New York Zoological Park, tried to quantify the bird losses. He published his numbers in 1899. The numbers varied state by state, from a low of 10 percent for Nebraska to a high of 77 percent for Florida. Groups trying to improve mental health and decrease substance abuse in Valley County are sponsoring a Mental Health Walk on Saturday, Oct. 5. Mildred (Floerke) Irving, age 94, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 24, surrounded by her loving family. She was a country girl who was raised on a cotton farm in Taft, Texas, with her two brothers whom she dearly loved. Mildred was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother whose first priority was always family. Mildred was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Taft to Max August and Hattie (Schilhab) Floerke. Louise "Lucy" M. (Dees) Linner, age 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Mont. A memorial service for Lucy will be held next summer in Fort Peck. She was born Jan. 28, 1938, in Hazelton, N.D., to Fredrick and Christina (Oswald) Jenner.
