  • Scottie Pride On Full Display

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Sep 18, 2019

The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has decked the streets in Scottie Pride this year. The idea to order 100 flags from the Glasgow Student Council came up over the summer with the Chamber Board from member and Scottie Athletic Director Brenner Flaten. He said, "this was an idea that just came to me in the middle of the summer when driving down Main Street and taking note of how many flag holders are already in place. I have always loved that Glasgow and National Honor Society put up American flags...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Sep 18, 2019

Montana Attorney General Tim Fox sat down with the Courier last week to discuss his campaign for the Republican nomination for the Governorship next November. Currently, Fox is taking on U.S. Representative Greg Gianforte and Dr. Al Olszewski in his bid for the party’s nomination, and if he is successful he will go up against either Montana’s Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney, Montana Representative Reilly Neill or Montana Representative Casey Schreiner on the Democratic ticket. Fox, a Montana native from Hardin, kicked off his interview by hig...

  • Hydrology Workshop Highlights Water's Unpredictability

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Sep 18, 2019

Perhaps the most ironic thing occurring during the National Weather Service’s hydrology workshop last week was that while scientists, conservation district reps, bureaucrats, meteorologists and hydrologist met on the inside, a flood advisory had been issued for a small region of Valley County only miles away on the outside. It was a small example of what the participants of the Glasgow and Billings Eastern Montana Hydrology Workshop were trying to accomplish. The workshop was held at the Fort Peck Interpretive Center from Sept. 11 through 13 a...

  • New Mural Brightens Up Downtown

    Michelle Bigelbach, The Courier|Sep 18, 2019

While driving downtown throughout the past few months, drivers and pedestrians have seen a new piece of artwork go up at the corner of 4th St. S. and 1st Ave S., on the outer side of the addition to Busted Knuckle Brewery. The mural, which was painted by Glasgow's Andy Fahlgren and Madelyn House, encompasses a reflection of the community, including imagery such as a farmhouse, the powerhouses in Fort Peck, a farmhouse and cows. "The area pays tribute to the many people that helped get us to...

  • What You Need To Know About Interventions

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, Dealing with loved ones can be difficult sometimes and that only gets harder when they have a problem with drugs and alcohol. A big part of dealing with a loved one's addiction is getting them into treatment. But what if they are unwilling to go? Intervention is the next logical step, however what is an intervention and how do you pull one off? Contrary to popular belief, successful interventions usually aren't like the ones you see on TV. Interventions that are successful usually...

  • Red Flags

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, The President has frequently repeated the NRA talking point that more extensive background checks on gun sales would not have prevented the recent rash of mass murders. Maybe so. It's hard to accurately see what lurks in a murderer's mind. The NRA, and therefore Trump, are skeptical about "red flag" laws, arguing that such laws are based on supposition and hearsay, and could result in the government wrongfully confiscating someone's property. Probably true. Both Trump and the NRA ar...

  • Pass It On

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, Arlie Gordon, on Aug. 20, put this article on Facebook and ask [sic] that people pass it on. "I may upset a few of you by posting this. We can handle it one of two ways. Discuss it like adults or you can unfriend me – your choice. You have your opinions and I have mine. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I add that my ancestors came here from other countries and they learned the language and worked and never once did I hear any of them trash America. They became citizens, w...

  • Montana's Bully-Free Montana Act in Action

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, Montana's children are off to a new school year and the excitement of learning. Children need and deserve to learn in a safe environment. When children are bullied in schools, they feel unsafe and learning (and life) is harder. This is why I'm leading the fight to stop bullying in our schools. In 2015, I was the lead sponsor of the Bully-Free Montana Act. Because I carried this legislation, I am frequently contacted by citizens regarding bullying situations and what schools are...

  • Raising Taxes On Tobacco Products

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, Whether or not you use tobacco, you are paying for it. Every year, each household in Montana spends $791 in taxes due to smoking. What's more, Montanans spend a total of $440 million annually in health care costs directly caused by smoking. Did you know that raising taxes on tobacco products is one of the most effective ways to reduce use and improve the health of Valley County's residents? The last time Montana raised the tax on tobacco was in 2005. According to the U.S. Surgeon...

  • Climate Change and Global Warming

    Sep 18, 2019

Dear Editor, Climate change and global warming are important issues for Montanans. Coming changes will broadly impact our economic sectors and put inevitable strain on state resources. Challenges need to be addressed, especially in agricultural, business and tourism sectors where impacts are already being felt. The unpredictable weather patterns of a changing climate continue to have drastic consequences and Montana needs to be prepared. Along with planning for the future, we need to address...

Homeless For a Night is an opportunity for students to take action on the homeless problem. Those who participate will spend a night in front of the Pioneer Museum to discuss, think and learn about homelessness. During the event, which will be from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the students are... Full story

    Sep 18, 2019

Donnie "Fizz" Ray Feezell passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, surrounded by his family at his daughter's home in Williston, N.D. Our father's wishes were that there be no memorial services and we have chosen to honor them. He wouldn't have wanted anyone to waste time or money coming to mourn his loss. He wanted everyone to have a great time and live life the "Fizz Way." He received his nickname in school. He never missed a day. They used to say "Rain or Drizzle here comes Fizzle" which eventually... Full story

  • Another Week Of No Wheat Harvested

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Sep 18, 2019

Another week had passed without any wheat being harvested. Unfortunately, there’s still more rain in the forecast. Granted, only small amounts are forecast, but it’s just enough to keep things from drying enough to go after our wheat. The humidity is so high there’s a heavy dew even on the dry days. It’s very frustrating to see your year’s work (and income) going bad in the fields and there isn’t anything you can do about it. As a friend who works in the weather service said to me, “Farmers! You all want rain until you don’t.” The g...

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Sep 18, 2019

The Glasgow Scotties played their first home game of the season on Friday the 13th. Despite the date, home team fans were treated to a super star night, rather than superstition. Under a sky threatening rain and more, the Scotties stepped up for the W. Cordell Younkin was first across the line for the Scotties from 25 yards out in the first quarter. Alec Boland followed that with a successful two-point conversion run to take an 8-6 lead after 12 minutes of play. Baker was on the board for six...
