  • Looking Back To Move Forward

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Sep 9, 2020

Mary Helland loves history. History is the lifeblood of her store, Mary's Mercantile on Front Street in Glasgow. Everything about the establishment is a throwback to an earlier time, an homage to the ranchers, farmers and outlaws who established themselves in the region. She can speak at length on the history of her building, the condition it was in when she purchased it and what it took to restore the space. In recent months she has taken her love of history and incorporated it into a new ventu...

  • More COVID Payments For Farmers and Ranchers

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Sep 9, 2020

American farmers and ranchers should expect details on a second round of Coronavirus Food Assistance Program payments this week. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has long hinted that another round of payments would be coming for producers. He confirmed while speaking last week during a virtual conference that rules for assistance were being written and would hopefully be released after Labor Day. At least $14 billion should be available through the program as provided through the CARES Act. Ag Insider reported that President Trump has suggest...

  • TC Energy Looks To Comply With CWA

    Michelle Bigelbach, The Courier|Sep 9, 2020

The Keystone XL Pipeline project is making a step forward after being told by Federal Judge Brian Morris and the Supreme Court of the United States they could not proceed under Nationwide Permit (NWP) 12 earlier this year. On Aug. 14, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SDDENR) and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) issued a joint notice of permit pending, describing not only the Keystone Pipeline Project in general terms but also describing how...

  • Addressing Fear

    Sep 9, 2020

Dear Editor, When I was a teenager, I allowed a few words spoken in jest to affect me to the core. I was always thin and athletic, and prided myself in being different by not following the crowd on any issue. Yet, I slowly began to let words and advertising into my thought-life. I started to exercise more and eat less and soon found myself with an eating disorder. What people do not realize when they see someone like this, is that the issue is not over-exercise and lack of food. Rather, the eati...

  • Valuing Public Land

    Sep 9, 2020

Dear Editor, It's not about values. I believe Senator Daines when he says he joins the majority of Montanans who value public land, protecting it for this and future generations. There are few values as "Montana" as public lands and very few things that we all agree on more. In the latest (2020) Colorado College Poll of the West, 84 percent of Montanans agree that public lands are important when deciding whether to support an elected official. You can't get to 84 percent of anything without a...

  • This And That

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Sep 9, 2020

Editor's Note: This column was submitted to us on Aug. 31. The making of another frosting used up the remainder of my fresh raspberries. The following recipe was finally tested and is definitely a keeper. I’m using it for graham cracker “sandwich cookies”, as well as on a dark chocolate cake. The cupcake recipe I recently shared also makes a fine 9x13” cake. Chocolate and raspberries really do go well together. Cream cheese makes a frosting so much richer, too, don’t you think? • Scotties Take A Bite Out Of Cowboys

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Sep 9, 2020

Uncertainty still hangs over the sports season this year due to the novel coronavirus with coaches and staff doing all they can to provide a safe and fun season for their players. The Glasgow Scotties themselves appear ready to cram as much football in as they can, while they can, as evidenced at their home opener this past Friday, Sept. 4, against the Conrad Cowboys. The Scotties blew out the Cowboys 36 to 8 in front of the home crowd at Scottie Field, cheering from the stands and from their ve...

  • Scottie Boys and Girls Claim First in Poplar

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Sep 9, 2020

Both teams of Glasgow Scottie Harriers picked up the number one spot at the Poplar Invitational on Sept. 5. The wins were made possible by the fact that the top five runners for the boys all placed in the top 16 with four of the five in the top nine. For the girls the top five all placed in the top 20 with the top three among the first 10 runners to finish. That really helped the boys said junior Bergen Miller. "Having all our guys so close together and so close to the front puts a huge gap...

  • Kayak With Mussels Stopped In Nashua

    Montana FWP, For the Courier|Sep 9, 2020

Montana’s watercraft inspectors intercepted the 27th mussel-fouled vessel for the year. On Aug. 29, vacationers traveling from Michigan to Glacier National Park with a kayak strapped on their van stopped at the Nashua inspection station where inspectors found a zebra mussel attached to the kayak’s hull. The kayak had last been in Michigan’s Lake Cadillac, a known mussel-infested waterbody. Inspectors thoroughly decontaminated the kayak before sending the vacationers on their way. The Nashua watercraft inspection station is managed by the...
