Montana’s sole representative in the U.S. House has concluded a listening tour with stops at each of the state’s 56 counties. Congressman Greg Gianforte embarked on the trip, which covered over 3,700 miles across the state, after being sworn into office in mid-June. Karla Nix was sentenced Sept. 5 to six years differed with credit for 90 days served in Valley County Detention Center. On Jan. 18, Nix was charged with felony exploitation of an older person. In addition to time served, Nix will pay a fine of $2,000 and restitution of $5,000. Standard court conditions will apply regarding mental health assessments and restricted access to the elderly. This harvest has been extra long for me. That’s because the crop is so poor we decided we couldn’t afford to hire our usual custom cutters (and we are sorry they are hurting, too) to cut a third of it for us. It’s just Dennis and me doing it all. We cut and fill the truck by noon, haul it in and have a quick lunch, then go back out to fill the truck and grain cart again. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Peck Project has elected to ban all open fires within the Pines Recreation Area. Building, maintaining, attending or using a campfire, fire pit or charcoal grill is prohibited. Liquid petroleum and LPG stoves that can be turned on and off are allowed. Additionally, smoking is allowed only within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials. Hats off to Dan Miller and crew for the amazing work they have done on the Glasgow cemetery this spring and summer. Trimming and disposing of some trees and the removal of overgrown bushes has revealed gravestones that haven’t seen the light of day for decades. Although a work in progress, all these extensive efforts are resulting in a much-improved expanse and graveyard. Remember before Ziplock (and other brands) of storage bags? I still have a hard time throwing away a bread bag. I come from a generation that never threw anything away, as you might need it later. Plastic bread bags were a classic example. These were, of course, washed and dried for use another day. Doris "Dolly" N. (Duncan) Starkey of Pullman, Wash., passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Bishop Place Assisted Living with her family at her side. She was 91. A family service will be held at a later date. She was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Cat Creek, Mont., to Charles K. and Thelma M. (Dobson) Duncan. She grew up and went to school in Malta, graduating there. The Scottie volleyball team played their hearts out and it showed as they took control of the Chinook Invitational held Sept. 1-2. Pool play on Friday kept the girls busy and overall the day was successful. Playing just a single game to 30 didn't allow room for much error, but overall the Scotties played hard and eventually ended the day 3-1 (Glasgow def. Chinook 30-24; Glasgow def. The Scottie cross country team competed in their second big meet of the season Sept. 1 at the Billings Invitational. The Scottie boys placed very well overall, coming in 6th out of 23 teams. Ellis McKean led the team with his 14th-place finish and a time of 17:28.11, while Ike Braaten finished just behind him in 15th-place with a time of 17:28.34. The Scotties suffered a huge 54-0 loss in a recent pickup game against Whitehall. The game, which was held at Naranche Stadium in Butte on Sept. 1, was scheduled following the demise of Poplar's football program for the season. Glasgow's head coach, Greg Liebelt said of the disappointing loss, "We looked and played like a younger, inexperienced team - with seven new starters - playing our first game against a veteran semifinal team from last season with eight returning starters, without a doubt."
