On a fabulous sunny weekend, Aug. 12-13, 26 Girl Scouts from Glasgow, Nashua, Fort Peck and Wolf Point all joined together at Boy Scout Park to learn basic camping skills. Many of these girls had never camped before, and certainly most had never had to use their own skills. The girls broke into smaller groups and cycled through stations, with each one highlighting a different outdoor skill. The Frances Mahon Deaconess hospital is proud to welcome Glasgow native Andrew Fahlgren, MD, to the Glasgow Clinic. Dr. Fahlgren was originally born in Lewistown but spent the majority of his childhood in Glasgow and Fort Peck. He is a proud Glasgow Scottie and graduated from GHS in 2000. Stan Ozark and Haylie Shipp wear many hats in Glasgow. Outside of being radio personalities, Ozark is a councilman and hospital foundation board member, while Shipp is the owner of Shippwrecked. The Valley County Detention Center was the scene of an attempted escape by inmates Jay Witkowski and Austin Adams on Aug. 25. Witkowski recently admitted to killing Evelynn Garcia of Glasgow on New Year’s Eve. Adams was originally booked on charges of criminal endangerment and custodial interference. Valley View: There were several interesting letters to the editor last week regarding the upcoming vote on supporting Valley View. While we agree that some assistance in funding the home is needed, we feel the committee is taking the easy way out. School has started for some, or is about to start for others. I have noticed lists of school supplies showing up in various stores, as well as in our Courier. August "Gus" A. Axtman, 86, of Maddock, N.D., passed away at the St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, N.D., on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017. He was born Sept. 11, 1930, to August E. and Barbara (Leboldus) Axtman in Selz, N.D. He went to a country school through the eighth grade, then continued his education at the Abbey in Richardton, N.D., graduating in 1950. Opal Anna (Johnson) Buchanan of Helena, Mont., passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at the age of 98. She was born Sept. 3, 1918, to D. Pearl Pontius and Louis J. Johnson in Frazer, Mont. Preseason is always such a learning experience for players and coaches alike. Take, for example, the Choteau tournament the GHS volleyball team attended Aug. 25 and 26. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the 2017 Catfish Clash, held in Williston, N.D., on Aug. 19, as 53 boats set out to conquer the Mighty Missouri. The Williston section always provides big fish and plenty of them. The days leading up to this year’s seventh-annual “Clash” were consistent and, in turn, it provided a bit of river stability that all anglers were able to enjoy.
