  • Driven To Serve Those Who Served

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Aug 13, 2014

As the mile markers pass by on roads across the state, several volunteer drivers in Valley County have been doing their part to help out local veterans in Eastern Montana. The number of volunteers has started to dwindle down, but the six left have been continuing to carry the torch and hope to recruit new volunteers to help with their passion. You many have noticed the white vans with the letter DAV across the doors and hood. Some of the drivers are veterans, others are not, but they all have... Full story

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Aug 13, 2014

Volunteers from NorthWest Energy and from the city of Glasgow came out from Great Falls, Malta and here in Glasgow to help plant trees around town. Some of those trees went to fill in a few areas in the cemetery, and around eight or 10 trees will help fill Candy Cane Park. Scott Patera explained that the program called Trees Together is a way the NorthWest Energy is helping out communities. He said that this is the third year they've participated in donating trees in South Dakota, Montana and...

  • The Question Is: Will You Take City Survey? Results Will Help Housing Plans

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Aug 13, 2014

As residents of Glasgow start checking their mailboxes, they might spot an envelope asking to fill out a survey. Don't throw that envelope away; it's not junk mail. It's part of many steps needed to be taken to complete the housing plan that Great Northern Development (GND) is assisting the city with. Anyone with a water meter will be sent the survey and those who reside in the Northern Heights area and in other subsidized housing in Glasgow might see a few ladies going door to door to get surveys handed out Aug. 20-21. Glasgow Mayor Becky...

  • Make America Strong Again

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Aug 13, 2014

We already know our government is shipping far too much of our tax dollars overseas to “developing counties.” We already know that our national debt has nearly doubled in size since Obama was given the office of the presidency by minorities, progressives (formerly known as liberals) and single white females 18 to 32 years of age. We already know our “entitlement society” has increased 10-fold in the past 10 years, costing this nation hundreds of billions of tax dollars and putting several states near bankruptcy. We already know our... Full story

  • Glasgow Cemetery Ordinance Needs Public Input

Fay Dowe, Letter To The Editor|Aug 13, 2014

Dear Editor: The Glasgow cemetery ordinances need to be revamped, allowing those who purchase the plots to make their own choices. The problems are mainly which stones can be placed and what is allowed on the graves in the form of memorials. The flat stone ordinance was never well received and a change is welcomed. Uprights are now being allowed and that should be all that needs to be said on the issue. But the city likes to have control. Therefore the proposed ordinance is much of the same. Why must the city insist on having rules that will...

  • Glasgow Native Says Lack Of Benches At Fair Angers Her

Shely Allen Balsley, Letter To The Editor|Aug 13, 2014

Dear Editor: I brought two of my grandkids to Glasgow for two weeks and knew the fair was going to be there while we were there. I told the kids we would go to that fair instead of going to the Helena fair. THERE WERE NO PARK BENCHES FOR US TO SIT AT WHILE OUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS WERE ON RIDES. I am a three-time cancer patient and am still suffering from that night. Why do they NOT supply benches for the elderly? I was appalled that no one cares about making sure their citizens can go with their kids and grandkids to have a good time while the...

  • The Power Of One

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Aug 13, 2014

Many times I've heard, "What difference can I make? I'm just one person." Dr. Gordy Klatt was just one person. Because of him and his determination to help as many people diagnosed with cancer as he could, and hopes of eventually finding a cure, Relay for Life was born. A friend of mine in Canada has a son who is riding his bicycle across Canada to raise funds for research on phenylketonuria (PKU) – a type of amino acid disorder in which a person's body cannot break down phenylalanine from the food they eat. PKU can cause a host of medical...

  • Lawn Care, Then & Now

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Aug 13, 2014

If you are fretting about how much time it takes to keep a lovely yard, remember when: • Lawn mowers were push reel mowers and those really got uptown with the addition of a grass catcher. • Rototillers for the flower bed or garden. • All of the hoses and sprinklers you got to move from spot to spot. No underground sprinklers with automatic timers. And when did Miracle-Gro become available? Fertilizing the lovely yard was a chore, plus you needed a farmer/rancher friend. Then there was the plus side. Remember kids running through the...

  • Corn and Bootlegging in Frazer, 1922.

    Aug 13, 2014

This photo shows Til Hagen to the left and Clyde Flint holding some pretty tall corn in front of the Frazer Hardware store in 1922. The corn stalks were from Sherman McCune's broom corn south of the river. Frazer was a busy town during this time, as it was a place for bootlegging traffic. Clyde took out a $2,500 loan to help a man known as Mr. Rice, who owned a few lumber yards. Rice was in financial troupble. Rice had been buying liquor up in Canada and bringing it to Glasgow where he'd hand... Full story

The fair took place Aug. 1-5 and had a wide range of events offered. While entries into the fair were down this year, those die-hard fair fans were still enthusiastic. Several entries came in that covered a wide variety of categories and talents. Here, Cordell Younkin takes a moment and snuggles up to his hog during the fair. Special thanks to... Full story

A water drawdown planned to begin Aug. 15 at Paulo Reservoir south of Glasgow has been postponed, Bureau of Land Management officials said Tuesday. The postponement will allow more management options to be considered as Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and BLM staff work to enhance fishing opportunities at the popular impoundment. The reservoir has primarily been managed by FWP for bluegill and largemouth bass, but FWP says it has been infested with common carp.... Full story

  • Regatta Debuts Here Friday

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Aug 13, 2014

With a large body of water and a lot of wind in supply, Fort Peck Lake will become the new location of a sailing event. The first Can-Am Fort Peck Lake Laser Regatta will take place this weekend at the Fort Peck Marina. Events start on Friday, Aug. 15 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 17. The Laser is a small boat with a sail attached. Imagine a boat similar in size to a dingy, about 14 feet in length, with a large white sail attached. The sport is actually an Olympic sport and the small boats are raced all over the world. Julie Burke...

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Aug 13, 2014

Fort Peck has vast land and water. It holds fishing tournaments, foot races, bike races and a sailboat regatta. What else is missing from Fort Peck? Triathlon. The idea of starting a triathlon first came to Carin Barnett, a resident of Fort Peck, when she thought about attending a couple of out-of-town events. Friends encourage her to practice on her own right here at home. The idea grew more exciting as she realized that this could be a fun community event with more friends getting involved. She named it Under The Dam Triathlon. It's slated...
