    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Aug 7, 2019

On a clear night closing out the Northeast Montana Fair Aug. 3, the stars were center stage in front of the grandstands. Warming up the crowd was 32 Below, from Fargo, N.D. The band, who has shared a stage with country music legends like Little Big Town, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Charlie Daniels, played a variety of tunes from covering well-known hits to their own original music like Sea of Beer Cans. The energetic opening act lured the crowd closer to the stage, giving away band swag and p...

  • FPST Serves up Salsa and Brews

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Aug 7, 2019

Normally, one expects to see actors front and center, but on July 28, it was the stage that was, well, center stage at the Busted Knuckle Brewery in Glasgow. Sunday evening, hot off the opening weekend of Peter Pan, the Fort Peck Summer Theatre crew and members of the Fort Peck Fine Arts Council took over the Busted Knuckle for Brews for a Cause. Their goal, aside from relaxing, was to raise funds for a new stage floor for the nearly 100-year-old building. Volunteers set up a salsa bar and a donation bucket, while Busted Knuckle owners, Ben and...

  • Mud Pies and Mothers At Home

    Helen DePuydt, Prairie Poet|Aug 7, 2019

Whenever Dorri and I visit on the phone, we can’t help but reminisce about our childhood days in Malta, Mont. Life was simple yet joy filled – in the Depression Days. There was an abundance of cottonwood trees to be climbed – oh what fun for us. After all, weren’t we tomboys? Dorri was the youngest in her big family, and I was the youngest of four – the two oldest were my brothers, then my sister, Hazel, then I at the tail end. With a six year age difference between Hazel and me, there was no playing together; but luckily, Dorri lived nex...

  • Old Roads and Our Roots

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Aug 7, 2019

Do you drive the highways between Glasgow, Nashua, Malta or Opheim and remember them as they used to be? If you are looking at your surroundings you can often pick out remains of the old road beds. I remember driving on gravel for half of the trip to Glasgow from Opheim. And in my memories it seems that a lot of Highway 2 (going either east or west) was extremely narrow. I do remember that we didn’t drive 70-80 mph at that time but our cars were also bigger. Going to wider highway and shoulders you could pull over on was a real asset. Now we w...

  • Still Too Much

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Aug 7, 2019

The raspberry picking continues. That chore easily consumes two hours of each of my days except Sundays. I have plenty of those delectable fruits in my freezer, and so my local family and several friends are reaping the rewards of my excessive harvest. I have had one person stop by to pick her own, with my permission, but she hardly made a dent. I think (and hope) they're starting to slow down. I've also had a lot of green beans coming on. This week I did manage to get several jars of them...

  • Salt, Sweat and Swagger

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Aug 7, 2019

Northeast Montana Fair goers were treated to the usual – with a few notable selections – of food and entertainment at the Valley County Fairgrounds last week, but like every year nothing gets the blood pumping, the drinks flowing and the crowd booming like the PRCA Rodeo. In spite of heat, dust and the allure of the lake, this year drew hundreds out to watch cowboys and cowgirls test their grit and determination against some stubborn ranch animals, bulls, broncos and the ever-defeating tim...

  • FORE the Kids Awards Scholarships To Three GHS Grads

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Aug 7, 2019

Twenty-three two-person teams took to the links on July 28, to raise funds for scholarships for Scottie golfers. Though the legendary northeast Montana wind was blowing, there were plenty of great golf shots, helped along by big eight-inch cups. The field of teams was divided into three flights, based on handicaps. "The most youths we've had play so far," said Jennifer Jackson, tournament co-director of the 12 junior golfers who joined the adults this year. "It's great to see the future of our...
