  • Vet Warns Against Common Preventable Diseases in Pets

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Aug 1, 2018

According to Dr. Chelsie McAllister, DVM of Valley Vet Clinic in Glasgow, canine parvovirus and distemper virus in Valley County are much higher in this region than in most. According to McAllister, the high rates are due to a lack of proper vaccination in puppies, which she says can lead to costly treatment or even death despite being preventable. Canine parvovirus targets the dog’s gastrointestinal tract causing bloody diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy. According to Dr. McAllister, the disease can be cured with costly t...

This year the trip involved delving into their nation's history in Boston as they walked the Freedom Trail and climbed to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument. They stood at...

  • John Michael Montgomery to Headline Northeast Montana Fair

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Aug 1, 2018

"So, first question, just how tired are you of doing these pre-concert interviews?" may not be the best way to open up an interview with a musician gracing the Middle of Nowhere with a concert for the upcoming Northeast Montana Fair. But with John Michael Montgomery, it offered up the chance for the country music star to express his appreciation for the chance to perform. While admitting that he didn't always enjoy such talks, he now enthuses about touring and performing, "I enjoy it a lot more...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Aug 1, 2018

Chase Redfield, of Opheim, is looking forward to a few good rounds of bareback bronc riding this year on his home turf at the Northeast Montana Fair. Redfield has been riding pro for nine years qualifying for the Montana Pro-Rodeo circuit finals for seven of the last eight years. • Raspberries and Beans: The Magical Fruits

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Aug 1, 2018

I will admit to having been a bit hasty recently when crying about my poor raspberry crop. I was doing the opposite of “counting my chickens before they hatched”. I’m not sure what you call that, but I was seriously wrong. There are sections where the canes are dying earlier than usual (where the emitters were plugged last summer), but the other areas are making up for that deficiency. There are now more than enough packages of raspberries in my freezer to see us through until next year’s crop. Plus we are eating fresh ones daily. Several...

    Betty Stone, Glasgow|Aug 1, 2018

Dear Editor, This letter is a thank you to the Fish, Wildlife, & Parks Department for upgrading the boat ramp/parking at Duck Creek. With my husband recently having Open Heart Surgery and degenerative arthritis, it is so nice to have the handicap parking available. • Applying Doctrine in a Trade War

    Gwendolyne Honrud, Community Commentary|Aug 1, 2018

At times, it can feel as if the only certainty with the current administration in Washington, D.C., is uncertainty. Where ever you stand on supporting or not supporting this president, it is hard to argue that he has been a stabilizing force in domestic or global politics. Some of us have feared escalating or new conflicts around the globe. With the beginnings of a trade war, our farmers will be on the front lines. Uncertainty is already affecting markets worldwide. Farmers are certainly no strangers to uncertainty, from weather to insects to...

  • How to Help Out Those Surviving

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Aug 1, 2018

Quite often I’ve heard, “I don’t have cancer. But is there anything I can do other than make a monetary donation to help people who do have cancer?” Oh, my, yes, there is! And many of those ways are so simple. For instance, housekeeping tasks are at times out of reach of someone who has cancer and undergoing treatment. Dusting the furniture, vacuuming the carpeting, sweeping and mopping floors, changing bed linens, cleaning up dirty dishes, doing a load of laundry -- all these things help a person tremendously. Watering flowers, mowing the law...

  • Remembering Dement Beach

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Aug 1, 2018

Does anyone remember Dement Beach, which was located about 12 miles northeast of Opheim and 8 miles north of Glentana? Having spent most of my teen years in this area it is mind boggling to me that there was actually a swimming resort, or bath resort, in that area. I was fortunate to be given a panoramic picture of this unbelievable resort taken in the 1930s. There are a number of vehicles lining the bank. It was noted that there was not a single one of them that supported the present day rounded top. Of course there were many patrons in their...

  • Scottie Athletes Don't Take Summers Off

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 1, 2018

I've been a sports mom for a long time, and a fledgling sports writer for a few years. I've had the opportunity to observe many coaches. Over the years, it has become apparent that they all have different coaching styles and philosophies. One thing they do have in common? They want their athletes to work hard all year, they want dedication to the sport and they are willing to put the time in themselves for the athletes to achieve their goals. Every summer, you will find the dedicated athletes of...
