  • Back-to-Back Champions

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jul 14, 2021

The trophy for the 2021 Montana Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament stayed local this year – about as local as it could get. Fort Peck's Jason Eggebrecht and Glendive's Ross Lien combined forces again this year to win the tournament for the second year in a row. The feat marks them as the only back-to-back champions in the tournament's history. Eggebrecht also became the only three-time winner. The duo, who won last year's tourney with a record 80.97 two-day haul, pulled in 74.47 pounds this y...

  • 'Git Along Little Dogies'

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|Jul 14, 2021

Kasey Forum, 16, is on his way to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Lincoln, Neb. to compete in cutting. The high school junior qualified for the event in early June during state finals in Baker, Mont. "With cutting, you have a herd of cows in a pen and four guys in each corner" Forum told The Courier over the phone on Saturday. "You are on your horse and walk it in there and drive the cows up the pen a little ways. You pick a cow that wants to be cut and for a few seconds try cutting...

  • Speed Limit Sign Needed

    Jul 14, 2021

Speed Limit Sign Needed There is a problem for people in northeast Glasgow between the high school, middle school and church. We have encountered hazards. First, a 15 mph sign on the west end of Angus Street has been removed. On the east side at Cloud Street, there is a sign that says "SLOW." Does this mean 25 mph? Now, on Angus and also on Cloud, people have said it is just about impossible to back out of their garages because of traffic. They must back in their garages or driveways. We live...

  • Biden Administration Admits Defunding Police Doesn't Work

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Jul 14, 2021

Talk about hypocrisy. The Biden Administration is now touting efforts to fund police in a knee-jerk reaction to a massive increase in violence nationwide. This comes on the heels of 2020 when the Democrat platform did virtually nothing to denounce violent protesters across the country who torched cities as they chanted "defund the police." While Biden never came out and said directly the words, "defund the police," he did answer a question asking if he was willing to redirect funding away from police departments. "Yes, absolutely," he said. Thi...

  • President Biden's Gun Crime Strategy

    The White House|Jul 14, 2021

In June, President Biden unveiled a comprehensive strategy to combat gun violence. This strategy implements preventative measures that are proven to reduce violent crime, and attacks the root causes – including by investing in effective community policing and addressing the flow of firearms used to commit crimes. Combined, the Administration's comprehensive strategy will: • Stem the flow of firearms used to commit violence, including by holding rogue firearms dealers accountable for violating fe...

  • Gossip, Drama Aplenty at 'The Spitfire Grill'

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|Jul 14, 2021

When an ex-con arrives in a small Wisconsin town, rumors run rife. But, could this hardened criminal be exactly what this town teetering on the edge of oblivion needs? Thus unfolds "The Spitfire Grill," now showing at Fort Peck Summer Theatre. "The story line follows a young woman by the name of Percy, who has fallen on some hard times," said Director Pam Veis. "She is actually just released from prison." Veis was mum about the reason Percy was incarcerated, leaving that detail to be discovered...

  • Vargos Are Back, Baby!

    FRANK A and LIN L VARGO, Special to the Courier|Jul 14, 2021

A big thank you to our kind readers, both of you, who suggested that we give it a go again. Hence we met with the new editor of the Courier, Mister Chris McDaniel, and found him to be most congenial and a good find in the newspaper industry. He will do Glasgow a great service. Good on him. Water, water, everywhere ...except on the west end of Ash street in St. Marie. You just don't know how important water is until you don't have it. Those of us who live on this street have been without water fo...

  • 'Soil for Water' Regenerative Agriculture Project Comes to Montana

    Special to the Courier|Jul 14, 2021

Building on a successful peer-to-peer network of Texas ranchers who are implementing innovative grazing techniques to improve soil health and increase profitability, the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is scaling up its Soil for Water project to support livestock producers and farmers across seven southern states and Montana. The Soil for Water project grew out of persistent droughts, which put a strain on agricultural producers across the country. The effort is combining the u...

  • Why are the Cops Following Me?

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Jul 14, 2021

A very common complaint against patrol officers is that they followed a vehicle for an extended period of time for no apparent reason. Being in a small town; our officers are trained to have a great understand about what is going on in their community during their shift. Patrol officers are also trained to recognize oddities while on patrol. That is something not normal from what they see every day. Most of the time, it is a subtle driving behavior or avoidance of law enforcement. Commonly, the...

  • Repentance Necessary to Escape God's Wrath

Pastor John Vallie, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod|Jul 14, 2021

"But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' [worthless] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." Matthew 5:22 The setting of out text is the Sermon on the Mount, the greatest sermon ever preached. And, Jesus here starts with the Fifth Commandment, "You shall not murder." The Fifth Commandment is the commandment that you would think...

  • Hooray for Rain!

Mary Honrud, Special to the Courier|Jul 14, 2021

We've had a short break from the brutally hot weather. Twice last week we woke to temperatures that had dropped into the high 50's. Having the windows open overnight was a treat. Blankets were wanted. Then on Thursday we were blessed with almost a half inch of rain. I almost didn't recognize the sound of it hitting the skylights. Dennis thought the ground would have absorbed that so quickly that you wouldn't know it had rained at all. He found out differently when the loaded semi couldn't make i...

  • No Fireworks this Year

Gwen Cornwell, Special to the Courier|Jul 14, 2021

July 4th and fireworks are behind us and most of us did not have fireworks to observe this year. However I do remember fireworks of the past. I do not remember if my memories connect just where and when these fireworks occurred. However, I do remember most fireworks of my young days in Glasgow were held at the Fair Grounds. I recall fireworks that maybe featured a hen followed by little chicks, as well as many other animals and of course always ended with the American flag. We still have...

Bu,t as we make more and more headway in our pursuit of a return to normalcy, why can't I walk into a store and buy a video game console or a tractor? What could they possibly have in common beyond universal appeal to boys of all ages? Chips! But not in your favorite flavor, unfortunately. No the technology industry is still very much playing catch-up when it comes to producing the...
