  • Frost Fires Back at HMS, Valley View Home

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jun 29, 2016

Angie Frost had worked for Valley View Home (VVH) as the Dietary Manager for over two years when she was unexpectedly let go the week of June 14th. Health Management Services (HMS), the managing agency that operates VVH, told Frost that she was being let go due to her poor performance in the recent Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) inspection. “I’m not exactly sure why I was let go,” explained Frost, “because we did the same things we always do.” Frost blamed a lack of training offered by HMS for the reasons b... Full story

    The Courier|Jun 29, 2016

It’s going to be a hot night on the town for Independence Day this year (even if it is a Monday). The Glasgow and Long Run Fire Departments have teamed up with Gene Hartsock and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce to put on a fireworks show at the fairgrounds on July 4, weather permitting. Official start time: Around dark. Don’t miss it! And don’t forget to start your day at the opening ceremonies for the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial site. The day has finally arrived! Beginning at 10 a.m., there will be refreshments and live music, as well...

  • Nashua School Superintendent, Clerk Resign

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 29, 2016

Personnel changes again dominated the regularly-scheduled school board meeting held in Nashua on June 21. Following board approval to hire an English teacher (Terri Kaufman) and several classified staff, the trustees also approved student attendance agreements for two students transferring to the Glasgow School District. Affected by the student transfers, the north bus route was revised and all bus routes were approved for the 2016-2017 school year. Toward the end of the meeting, the board voted to accept the resignation of Superintendent...

  • Crowd Welcomes Pearl Jam Bassist, New Skatepark in Malta

    Mark Hebert, Phillips County News|Jun 29, 2016

In the movie Field of Dreams, Ray Kinsella hears a whisper telling him, "If you build it, he will come," while he walks through an Iowa cornfield. In Malta on June 26, the tireless efforts of a group of Malta residents, countless donations of time and money by Phillips County businesses and folks combined with a beautiful donation by a Rock 'N Roll legend turned an empty field into a place of dreams as the city's skatepark officially opened. They built it, and he came. "The turn-out is...

  • Hinsdale Sweet Shop Offers More than Sugar

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 29, 2016

The first time I walked into Leona Knutson's Sweet Memories on Montana Street in Hinsdale, it was half by accident. Noticing a sign for coffee and ice cream on the otherwise sleepy thoroughfare, I swooped in for a pick-me-up, only to be confronted with something like a full-service eatery and two of the nicest people in Northeast Montana. I say something like full service because Leona and husband Lonnie (Swede) have a limited, rotating food menu: Just one breakfast dish per day and a short...

  • Reminiscing and Reunions

    Mary Honrud, Sowing Notions|Jun 29, 2016

With the All-School Reunion having occurred in Opheim this past weekend, it must be time for some reminiscing. I confess I’m not a Montana native. I didn’t grow up in Opheim, nor in any one place. I was a military dependent. We moved every few years as my father was stationed at various Air Force bases. I had just completed my sophomore year in Wiesbaden, Germany, at the General H. H. Arnold High School, when dad was reassigned as commander of the 779th Radar Squadron just outside Opheim. We were flown back to the states, to the D.C. area. Dad...

  • Survivor Support

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Jun 29, 2016

Feb. 19, 2010, a date that is burned into my memory. That was the day I had a modified radical mastectomy for Stage 2 breast cancer. March 19, 2010. The next date that is unforgettable for me. That was the day I began five and a half months of chemotherapy by infusion. The next few years I became used to taking a hand full of pills every day. Never one who ever took a pill, other than an aspirin for a headache, I found myself having to keep track of when to get prescriptions refilled and taking pills on a schedule. At the end of my...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Jun 29, 2016

Dirt Road Indictment My best friend’s father recently lost his battle with cancer. He was a man I knew my whole life, a good man. He had been sick for a long time and I would see him in the local grocery store and say hi and chat him up. I went to see him one more time before he passed, the first time I had driven “down” his drive in the 10 years since I moved back to Saco. I drove “by” his drive countless times, often twice a day for work. It is in these times a lot of people look back with regret. “How many times could I have driven in t...

  • Circle Diamond Cowboys

    Helen DePuydt, Saco Stories|Jun 29, 2016

According to an old ballad, Saturday night was the loneliest night of the week. Not so for the Circle Diamond cowboys. After their once-a-week bath, either in a creek during the heat of summer days or with a tub full of water heated on the kitchen range, the next step was dressing up in clean attire. With permission of the ranch foreman, they were off on horseback to Malta where they encountered a few girls quite interested in accompanying them to a dance at Wagner, a tiny but lively town west of Malta. After locating the off-duty stagecoach...

  • Commending Community

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jun 29, 2016

I am going to deviate a little this week to reminisce about class reunions. Do you remember the first school reunion you attended? For most that was the 10th year after graduation. Sometimes those first reunions make a memory that helps get us all excited about the next big reunion, or those memories may make us decide never to take in another reunion. The Opheim All-School Reunion was held this past week. All-school reunions are so much more fun that a “class” reunion. I do realize that I am talking about a small school and very small classes,...

  • Suicide is Preventable if We Work Together

    Ryan Zinke, Zeroing In|Jun 29, 2016

I draw a lot from my 23 years of military service. During that time I have known and served with many of our nation’s finest. However, some of the strongest men and women I have ever known have fallen on hard times and contemplated or committed suicide. It can happen to anyone. Many folks are familiar with the statistic that 22 American veterans take their own lives every day, but I wonder how many know that this crisis is much more far reaching. Montana leads the United States in suicides per capita. Suicides affect every aspect of our l...

  • Thunder Climbs Four Places in Plentywood

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 29, 2016

The Glasgow Thunder nearly brought home some hardware from the Plentywood swim meet this past weekend, June 25 and 26, placing fourth overall behind the Scobey Stingrays, the hometown Plentywood Dolphins, and the roster-heavy Sidney Tiger Sharks. Once again, the weather was a major problem with several lightning delays bringing the meet to a halt on Saturday. A typical swim-meet day ends mid-afternoon, but on Saturday the event was still going strong into the evening and didn't conclude until...

  • Bud Geer Honored at Opheim Rodeo

    Janet Bailey, Courier Correspondent|Jun 29, 2016

The Opheim Rodeo was held June 26, following a parade down Main Street. The event started with a presentation of flags by Tanner Solberg and Russell Solberg on horseback. After the playing of Johnny Cash's "Ragged Old Flag", Cowboy Hall-of-Famer Miles "Bud" Geer was driven into the arena in a pickup. This years rodeo was dedicated to Geer, rodeo stock producer and cowboy. Howie Solberg read about some of Bud's life: He was born September 18, 1921 in New London, Minn. Bud's father moved the...
